HUNT OF THE WEEK
K.C. Star
Missouri firearms hunters will get their last shot at deer starting today.
In Units 1-27, 33-37, 58 and 59, the late-season antlerless-only season is under way and will continue through Sunday.
The season was started several years ago by the Missouri Department of Conservation to reduce doe populations in units that were overpopulated with deer. In the process, many hunters were presented a nice bonus: a chance to fill their firearms tags.
Though hunters killed record numbers of deer during the November statewide season, biologists say there are plenty of whitetails still roaming the woods. And with weather predicted to be favorable for hunting this weekend, they are looking for another big kill.
Hunters took 14,808 deer during the antlerless-only segment last season.
