I've got a cow tag for thanksgiving week. Did scouting in July and have friends watching the herds. My advice is.... bring the shotgun, muzzleloader, bow AND rifle. You don't know which zone they'll be in day to day.

There's quite a few bulls there. Here's a dandy in the archery only area, right off the road. The one on the right makes me wish I had a bull tag.

I've been told the bulls are easier than the cows and I can believe it.

When exactly is your hunt? I try and get out there and get the lay of the land.

Once you have your permit will they let in just to scout? I know you can hog hunt but I thought you were restricted to certain parts of the base.

No, you can't scout on Fridays. Make sure you get their early friday so you can be the first in line to choose your area. One of my best friends work's out of FHL. He is a civilian contractor and trains the seabees in convoy training. So he patrols FHL all day and night. He told me the archery zones have alot of elk around. The problem though is their are a couple of main roads that are short cut's in certain zones that are closed right now. And to be honest, if you have not been their before you will get lost in the morning when it is dark. If the access gates are closed, dont be scared to go to the farthest east areas off Jolon because you can park and hike right in.

I did that hunt as the "buddy" a few years ago. Certainly harder than the archery hunt but still doable. The bulls we found were in bachelor herds. Some of those herds can have up to 100 bulls in them, if you find one, you have most likely found at least a few.

At the time I knew nothing about elk hunting and we brought no calls. More than one person has told me that those bulls will still respond to calls that time of year. I'd bring a bugle and a few cow calls if you know how to use them.

If it rains, be extremely careful on the dirt roads!!! I can't emphasize this enough. Those roads are the worst I've seen when they get wet.

Lastly, the fish and game wardens and biologist want you to be successful so listen to their advice during orientation. Hang around after and ask all the questions you want, they are up there all year and know where the elk are. If you bring a bow you will have access to areas other hunters will not, not a bad idea.

Good luck!

Let's add 20, 21, and 22 to that. Although the three area may be limited to archery only. I've seen them in 19 and 24 a few times but if I was hunting them, I wouldn't count on shooting one from those two TA.

Your hunt starts on a wed, chances are, since its over the holidays, most if not all areas will be open.

You can go up for a weekend "pig" hunt and do some looking around. You'll be limited to 3 area switches so choose areas wisely. Believe it or not, you can see many elk from the paved roads. If you have the time, I'd go up preseason on a weekend, spend a morning driving the paved roads BEFORE checking in for "Pig" and see what you can see from the pavement.

It gives you a pretty good overview of the areas, you'll more than likely see elk from the pavement and in general, it gives you a feel for the place. Then you can kind-of tailor your strategy when you check in for "pig".

In my case, I found a coupla of wonderful guys that know the area well and are frequently up there and they offered to help me, right after I offered up a forequarter as trade.:stir pot:

For the first few days, it should only be elk hunters, then the weekend pig crowd will be there and there will be a few more hunters in the field.

In general, If you spot a bull in an open rifle area, you should not have any trouble closing to within 200 yds, if your a little cautious.

Regardless, its worth going up at least one weekend, well before the hunt, to get a feel for the place, the terrain, the water holes, facilities etc.

Dress warm, its COLD up there in Dec-Jan.

Why, its one of those fine gentlemen that offered to help!:rotflmao:

In all seriousness.....

Nah, man, I appreciate it. As one hunter to another, the only way I can thank you for the time spent, the effort expended and in a way thats meaningful is to share the bounty of the nature with you.

Provided we bust our butts and get one down, of course... otherwise we'll both be suckin'....:bag-on-head:

maybe we should drag LIVE2HUNT out there in a stretcher so he can point out the elk! He's already shot one cow this year, in the first hour and half of the season.

You dont have to drag LIVE2HUNT, he will be at the base sick or not.
He is the one who plan to hunt CR after your FHL elk hunt.

LT, I believed an elk tag holder is only allowed to bring along one helper while out hunting. But I'll be out there roaming around by myself and keep on the lookout for a cow elk for you. My recommenation is to take your rifle and head to the lake I always mentioned to you on the opening morning. I can almost guarantee you can beat my hour and half record. And providing that you get one down, all I ask in return is to bring me the gutt pile. Deal?

I'm allowed two non-hunters, and how about i bring you to the gut pile? i'll leave eric to guard it.:lol bashing sign:

Its all good, we'll figure something out. Maybe bring radios so we're all on the same channel?

I hate to ask, but why do you want the gut pile?

Yep, you'll benefit from all our mistakes and success's. Your hunt is almost 30 days after mine.

Did know that if you google fhl maps, it will take u to the old JHO website and all the FHL maps are there?
