Don766,
If you want to shoot your elk with a rifle, and don't mind taking only a decent bull, the lake I told Ltdann about had a couple of pretty decent bull with the cows. But if you want a really big trophy, I've seen some really nice trophy bulls in area 16B just at the north end of the air strip behind the registration building. Also in the river between River road and the impact area is where all the big bulls hang out. I believed Ltdann's picture of the two bulls were taken in that area. Now you would need to hope that TA 16B, 20, 21, and 22 are open. I believed they might open those TAs but they might be limited to archery only. Back during July 4th weekend, they opened River Road for hunters to use for access to all the TAs at the south end of the base. I believed I was the first vehicle heading down River Road with about 10 other trucks in tow. Saw several really nice trophy bull ran across the road infront of my truck. Two of which looks like the two on Ltdann's photo.

Thank you all for the helpful info. I am not sure on a Trophy, this is my first Bull Elk hunt I don't want a spike but not sure if I would pass up on a decent bull vs waiting for a trophy.

What is considered a trophy Tule Elk?

To be honest, I didn't see a single spike while I was scouting. Considering that there is only about 3000 Tule elk in the world, and they're all in CA, ANY bull would be a trophy. There was many elk there that were 4x4 and better, horns as tall as a short man. I saw more than a few 6x6's and one or two 7x7's.

Almost all of them were in the archery only impact area, but evidence was strong that they routinely moved into other areas. Talking to the game guy, he said that the impact area (which is normally closed) would be opened for elk season, archery only, provided training wasn't being conducted.

If I'd had a bull tag in july, I'd have been done in an hour, not more than 200 yds from a good road. Those picts I showed were taken standing next to the truck on a dirt road, 150 yds away. I watched those guys for 45 minutes.

Its been pretty dry, so water and the surrounding areas are most likely the most productive.

Bring it all, bow, rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun, bow.

I'll be back on the 30th of this month, and I'll fill you in. Keep an eye on the elk forum.

Is there a difference between the shotgun area and the muzzleloader area? Or is it ether?

Until a few months ago, they were one in the same. For some reason known only to the Army, they are now seperate areas, and not always the designated as such. Meaning, one weekend a particular area is shotgun and next its muzzleloader. Go figure. If your short a weapon, now's the time to ask your friends to borrow, or just go with what you've got.

My gut feeling is that you won't have too much trouble getting on a bull. Having just said that, you still need to hunt hard.

Just a general question about FHL elk hunting...how many times have you all applied and what is the draw success? My buddy hunts hogs there and I am going this year during the xmas break with him (sent in my app & fees).

I had max preference points for my bull tag, but part of my luck was a misprint by Fish and Game showing 0% success rate last year.
