I hear ya, I've learned not to be a picky elk hunter and trust me, I'm no trophy hunter! I am saving points in AZ for that purpose though.

Nice trail cam pictures. I have seen a lot of nice bulls up there when i have been hunting or scouting with my dad. I shot both of my cow elk up in that unit and saw more bulls than cows on my last hunt. My sister is hunting bulls in that unit after Thanksgiving. My dad said he might see you up there. good luck on your hunt.

Thanks all. It took me three years to draw for this tag and thats after volunteering for the AZ hunter safety course for that extra point. I'm not exactly going to be picky, but not gonna shoot the first spike I see.

I don't know what I would do. I would like to think that I would not shoot the frist thing I see but I am itching to fill my freezer. Maybe after I get one or two then I can get picky. Good luck either way.

Thanks, I'll always take luck. Luck is under rated when it comes to hunting.

Must.....stay.....focused......hard....to ....concentrate.........

Be the elk....become one with the elk.....feel the wild ways.....see the shot..

All kidding aside, I do tend to immerse myself prior to my hunts. I currently have the following hanging in front of my desk so that I can look at it several hundred times a day.

My advice: don't look at the antlers. Repeat after me: "Don't look at the antlers".

After ignoring your poison oak suggestion....I believe I'll pay attention this time. ATT1765890.gif

Although, I'm not one to get pumped much about the antlers...if it bugles though, I'm lost.

Nothing like an elk bugle to turn me into a quivering mass of jelly.

I think it'll be pretty late for bugling. You never know. It is an awesome sound when you hear it for real.

Then there's the inevitable problem of where to put the mount in my little house....
Over the bed of course! LOL. I hope that's a "problem" you have to solve soon. Good Luck!

Dunno. Always heard some bugling in NOV here in CA. Nothing get's my blood pumping and causes my hair to stand on end like a nice long bugle.

Thanks! I'm in an older house with what I consider low ceilings. I'd hate to mount something near the baseboard and provide the cats with a new scratch post. Dunno about over the bed, the first good quake and the headlines would read "Dead elk gets revenge".

Step 1. Shoot decent elk
Step 2. Worry about mount later

Good sound advice, focus on the journey and task at hand but remember to have fun out there!

There was 30% chance of snow last night, temps routinely dipping below freezing at night. It'll be an adventure for sure! If your not having fun, your doing it wrong!
