Ok I have a question. Not quite sure if I can have a 44 mag shotshell in my pistol " for rattle snakes" while pig hunting, while in the Condor range. The way the regulations read you can't have it while hunting big game. Can bird hunter shoot quail with lead shot? Just starting to hunt again after about 7 years, seems like everything has changed.
Thanks

John W.

Here you go: lead shot is okay for quail and doves but NOT okay for nongame animals like rattlesnakes, so your shot loads are a no no.

Don't know the official answer on the shotshell, but I'd imagine most game wardens would let that slide regardless.

You can shoot quail and any small game animals with lead (tree squirrels, rabbits, etc.) but NOT non-game (e.g. ground squirrels).

For more info, check out the DFG website. They have a pretty detailed FAQ on the site, as well as the full regulations. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/condor/

The Commission has defined projectiles so that the prohibited bullets and other
projectiles can be understood. A “projectile” is defined as any bullet, ball, sabot, slug,
buckshot or other device which is expelled from a firearm through a barrel by force.
Additionally, for hunting nongame, projectiles include “shot” and “pellets”; lead in these
projectiles is prohibited as well.
It will be illegal to use any projectile that contains more than 1 percent lead for hunting
big game or nongame within the affected area. This includes centerfire as well as blackpowder/
muzzle-loader, and rimfire projectiles.
That about sums it up.

Well, seems like maybe handloading some snakeshot shells with steel shot would be legal? I used to see components for .38 Spl in the catalogs a while back. Also, in California, is it legal to load .410 shotshells in a .45 Long Colt caliber Contender pistol for snake use? or is that then considered a "short barreled shotgun" and illegal?

T/C had a neat barrel for your contender years ago: a 45 LC / .410 ga. barrel. Found out it was considered a sawed off shotgun. Oops.

Hey, count your blessings. We were just one vote in the supreme court away from losing gun ownership last week.
