Lead free sabot for pig

I'm trying to set upfor a pig hunt at FHL. I got a 12 guage rifled slug barrel for my NEF. Now I need ammo. I found lead free sabots at Midway but have no experinece with them. Every customer review was about deer. 2 3/4 or 3" for pigs and which one? There are a lot to choose from and the range from $12 to 18$ for five:skeered: I won't be wasting too much time at the range for that price.

Federal loads Barnes slugs in 3/4 and 1oz.

You're going to have to spend some time and $ at the range if you want to find out what's right for your gun. One load will shoot better than anything else, but that's six boxes of shells. Ouch.

I shoot both the Federal Barnes and the Winchester Supreme XP3. Personally I have tighter groups with the XP3 at 100yrds then the Barnes. I think it has something to do with the ballistic tip on the XP3. Also Im shooting them out of an 870 with a fully rifled barrel.

I'm exactly the opposite, my 11-87 hates the XP3s! It shoots....ok with the Federal Barnes combo. This year I'm gonna take the Remington 1oz copper solids to the range and see whats up. After that, I'll chose the most accurate and stick with it.

ltdann- Dont you think that is cheating putting a fully rifled barrel on an 11-87??? LOL. The whole box XP3's are in a 2 to 2 1/2inch group at 100yrd with Deer sights on my barrel. You have a scope on that thing? Red Dot???

It was the Deer slugger model with cantilevered barrel and yeah, it has a 10x50 Nikon on it.:roll-wink-green:

I'll like the wide field of view for those running shots...

Seriously, I love that shotgun. When we could use the winchester supreme partion golds, I could cloverleaf shots. I took my elk with that thing last Nov. If the Remingtons don't work, I'm stuck with the marginal Barnes.

Its great for kicking the bushes and taking running deer. I always clean it thourghly before a hunt, paying particular attention to the gas port, then I spray the workings with silicone. It collects less dirt that way and cycles every time.

I'm really hoping the 1 oz remington copper solids brings the accuracy back. I sure miss the bang-flop of the lead rounds.

Thats a nice gun. I just didnt have the money for the 11-87 or I would have gotten one. But I hope you find the right combo that will work for your gun.

Yeah, yeah....:stir pot: already have 3 muzzleloaders. kentucky flintlock, Hawkins .50 and an inline. I like the followup option of the autoloader for jump shooting. I did put in for a muzzle loader elk tag in AZ. If I draw that, it'll be a traditional hunt, round ball and open sights. That'll be a hoot.

I saved for about 2 years for the 11-87 and it was worth the wait and the money. It's an absolute joy to shoot. I get some amazed looks at the local rifle range when I take it to sight in. They can't believe 1)I'm hunting with it 2) I bother to sight it in 3) the cost of the ammo.

Oh, oh...Thats just wrong!!

Now you've got me thinking when was the last time I missed....For some reason, with that shotgun, I find it easier to hit them when they're moving. 'Course, all bets are off with the Tikka. Prefer a rest with that.

I remember now! I had Chuck rolling on the ground that time. Emptied the 12 ga twice at a deer trying to circle around me. He accused me of going belt-fed on the 11-87. Turns out the scope mount was loose, 17 inches high and left. Looking back at it, it was funny.:bag-on-head:

General Weapons:
Hunt Area 29 is park and walk, and is open for shotgun, archery, or muzzle-loader. The following areas will be open for archery, crossbow, muzzle-loader, and shotguns (NO SLUGS): 8 & 9. All other areas are closed NO ACCESS."

Sabots count as slugs, too, don't they? And if so, what should one use to hunt pigs with at FHL? BBB steel shot?

Been wanting to get down there, and wondering what to load in my smoothbored Xtrema, 'til they open the rifle areas.

It is confusing but area 29 and 13E is are walk-in areas, that allow muzzleloader/shotgun with slugs.

When they say shotguns no slugs, they're talking about bird hunting, not big game.
