Well, hooked up with BDB for a day on beautifull Lake Sonoma. Day started off good in that BDB and I showed up at the same time with plenty of time to get to ths hunt spot. Got on the water to a mild fog at the ramp but that changed quick, especially in the dark. When I meant to make a left turn up the lake, I ended crossing the lake.

Saw a light next to a building I didn't remember I knew I had lost my bearings already. Thankfully BDB had a compass and we navigated the shore but since I was feeling turned around already I was nervous we were going the wrong way. Don't think I could fly by instruments! We ended up at a point where I could see the opposite shoreline and crossed over right at a campground. Then I knew were we were and we were on our way. Got a little later start but what can you do when you can't see very far.
Got started up the hill and was greeted by some gobbling by turkeys on the ridge above us. Then some gobblers gobbled across the lake. Cool. Found some small wallows that had been hit recently and proceeded on to the big wallow. Not too much recent sign there. Went to where I found pigs last month and sure enough, they were gone. Figures. Hunted all day in and out of the brush, saw lots of deer including two bucks one of which was a toad of a forkie. Back tines must have been over a foot tall. Hunted till dark and saw a small group of pigs across the canyon but too far to try for.
It was good hunting with ya BDB. Hopefully we can do it again.

Get yourself a hand held GPS. You won't have that lost uneasy feeling in reduced visisbility.

I take my Rino 120 with me everwhere. Only reason we get to the blind on the Salto Sea without having to hug the shore and running agound.

Hey Kentuck, you think that deer might have been as big as the one I described seeing there back at the end of Oct. ?

"I heard one pig sqweelin down below me and then another grunting real close but this happened while waiting for this monster of a buck to turn in order to show me how many points he had. This buck was standing right where I had passed through 5 minutes prior and he was awesome. The horns where all bergundy colored, out more then 8" either side of his ears, and maybe 2 feet high. He turned and ended up being the largest 2x2 I have ever seen on a blacktail. Must have been 30" wide with the tines way out over a foot long and the bases going into his head as thick as my wrists. He put the prior 4x4 and 4x3 I seen in the dark to shame. The pig was nowhere to be found a couple minutes later after the deer took off."

... man I want to go hunt them deer more so then the pig!!

Wello,

I'm pretty sure this wa a different buck. It wasn't nearly 30" wide but may have been close to that tall and had good mass. He was heavy and had a rust colored coat.

Don't feel bad...

PIGIG and I did the same thing in October...motored out at oh-dark-thirty in the pea soup and got 100% unlocated (not quite the same at "lost") about 5 minutes after leaving the boat ramp.

Eventually caught sight of shore, but WHICH shore? Doh! We figured it out pretty quick and hugged the shore until it got light enough to see.

I'll definately be bringing my Garmin Vista next time!

We couldn't even see 5 feet in front of the boat it felt like with the fog in the dark. I was planning on brining my GPS and then decided not to. Net time I definitely will have it. Great day with lots of wildlife and got to meet another one of my "imaginary friends" face to face which was awesome. Kentuck spotted 4 hogs about 5oo yards away on an open ridge late in the day (20-30 minutes of shooting time left) and by the time he rounded me up and we tried to give chase they had moved out of the opening and we couldn't find them again. A few nice close encounters with deer is always fun too.

Definitely need to do this hunt again and maybe make a weekend out of it. Thanks again for the invite Kentuck

Sad part is I have a GPS and didn't even think about it. I need to mount a compass on the boat. Looking forward to getting back up there.
