Well how did everybody do? I was there in the blue yota. Saw nothing until monday morn. Then i couldnt get to them. But it was enough to get me to come runin back.
That only mean that you were succesful in seeing game. If you don't have annual pass get one this june believe its worth it. I get one every year since if been hunting there. Thats alot of years
The yearly pass expires with your hunting lic. (June 30). If the base is open for hunting, it is on first come bases as to which training area you can hunt.
I shot at one....around 0645 first morning in TA29 ...missed a big black one. He scared the crap out of me...he was about 10 yards off the main road about 3/4 of mile in...
My friends dad shot one Saturday ...Pictures will be up soon.
My boss shot a Coyote.....
There was a total of 5 for the weekend....We left on Monday and I dont know if anyone got anything after 11am.
Here's a late report of the hunt and I hope you guys would enjoy it.
I arrived to the spot an hour after shooting time and met up with friends on Sat morning. We did our morning stuff and didn't see anything promising so we moved on to another spot. Others started from top and I was coming up from the bottom and ran across some good tracks made by two pigs and saw another one going up to a finger. We regrouped on top and discussed for a plan and went on. We worked hard on Saturday through out the area we were hunting under but no luck. Sun was coming down fast so we decided to try our luck again on Sunday (First day of the year of the pig, actually a golden pig which only comes in every 600 years I was told).
Another promising morning had arrived and I was at the spot early this time but my friends were already there doing their stuff looking to get connected with pigs. One guy thought he heard the pigs so we went to the spot only to find some good tracks and signs but the pigs were long gone. I think I saw two sets of tracks.
We decided to spread out to see if we can find some good signs to work on for the day. All of us went off to their spots and I had a friend riding with me and went off to check out a couple of spots we didn't check on Sat. About an hour into my quest for pigs, I spotted a pig in a brush patch while driving this ridge road. I stopped the truck and told my friend that there's a pig while trying to retrieve my rifle from back seat.
I shoot semi auto rifle and this thing is loud when chambering a round. So my plan was to get out of the truck ram a round in and shoot in 1/10th of a second if possible. Everything went well and I was only 1/10th of a second away from pulling the trigger and that's when the door slams shut and off goes the pig which only left dust cloud behind him. I tried to get a hold of my friends on the radio but they were out of range or deep in a canyon. My friend in the truck is not in any shape to help me so I told him "I'm going to go after it” and left him in the truck. I walked the edge of the brush to make sure that it didn't leave the area. There were no tracks leaving the brush so it was good sign.
I slowly ease my way into the brush. I tried to avoid twigs and making any unnecessary noise and took careful steps. About 20 minutes into this nerve racking brush snaking I jumped the pig about 10 feet front of me but no shooting hole anywhere. I took a couple of step to the right and the pig moves to my left. I go back to my left and it moves to my right. This must have gone on for about 10 minutes. The pig was right in front of me and won't give me a shot and I can't blame him either. While in the midst of all this I remember seeing a small shooting hole just after I jumped the pig. I didn’t have anything on me so I was looking for some small rocks or something to mimic another creature's footing. God was with me this day and I was able to pick up some 2-3 inch shale with in reach. I double checked my rifle to be sure that the safety was off and the scope cranked down to 1.5X and shouldered the rifle and the left hand casting those shale about 20 feet. Crunch, crunch the pig moves to my left into the shooting hole and I pulled the trigger and heard the report.
To my surprise the pig still moves back and forth around the spot I shot at it but no more that 10 feet apart. Now I can hear him working his choppers loud and clear. Clap, clap and more claps. I took few steps back and forth to see if I can have visual of him but all I saw was violent shake of sage brush. The pig and I did this for another 5 minutes or so and finally he made one last mistake of his life which was to take a peep at me through a hole about a foot in diameter and that's when I sow its eye and nailed it just above the eye.
I took a few moments to bring by pulse down and confirmed downed pig and I think it was about 12 ft away from me. There were a few other stuff had happened but I will save it for later since this post got so long and boring to some of you.
It weighted 165lbs dressed and had about a little less than 2" of choppers a little shorter on the one side but VERY thick base.
Congratulations!!!! Oh!! That hunter looked familiar. Saw him somewhere I think. Anyways, that is a good story and a smart one for outmanuevering the pig. Pigs are very intelligent. But you were the smarter one. Congratulations again. 'Nuff said.
What a great story, I was right there with you, love the way my hair stood up on the back of my neck when I read the "clap clap and more claps". My adrenaline got a buzz, and I wasn't even there. I'll bet yours was through the roof! Very nice writing there Boarcz, the pigs great too, nice black Russian. Man you were close!
Thanks Larry and Deedy!
It was fun and now I'm ready to go back and look for its buddy. The other one had some what less common color pattern and at least another 50lbs+ so I will know when I see it. I'm going this weekend and staying at Bryson Resort so look me up if you come.
Hey Hntboar-we need to get the other one and this time we need to winch it out, lol.
I'm going up on Thursday so we'll talk after the base changes areas.
Sounds like we going to have the famous "The Strategic Multiple Hawg Massacre Meeting" in the game room, I love that meeting. Everybody gets a erase-able marker... on the "Big Special Map"
