I think they are still having the hunts, jut not issuing the tags:

All FHL 2020-21 Deer and Elk tags will be issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (Hunting Licenses and Tags).

Yes, you take a chance if you choose FHL, however, I do not see that they are closed to hunting at this time.

The regular draws through the state are happening, but they are not doing the "military only" draws that the base did in the past. That's why the number of tags in the state draw increased this year...really sucks since i've been waiting for the past 3 years or so to be around for these hunts...finally not deployed and they're not happening.

Obviously the state draw is there, but the odds on that horrible compared to the military draw.

I sent an email to the base fish and hunt program, and they said it hasn't been decided yet if hunts will take place at all this year. So i would say it's a little more risky this year than usual as far as being able to hunt FHL if you are lucky enough to draw a tag.

I think the last time they had a solid program was mid 2000s. A pro hunting CO was at the helm, he kicked serious ass Colonel (Soriano?? I forget) since then it has steadily gone downhill.

I drew an anterless tag for Thanksgiving weekend. Scouring for information and getting excited. I plan to camp on base in my pop-up. Lots of experience dealing with game but first time to Fort Hunter Liggett. Sure am open to any advice or recommendations.

I've done that hunt twice, once for me and once for my son. Had a great time both hunts. They were several years ago now, but when I get a chance I'll send you some info.
