I am going to try to get out to FHL this weekend for some pig hunting as long as some TAs are open. Has anyone been out recently? Seen or take any pigs? Has it been crowded w/ bird hunters? I'll be camping at the campground, if anyone wants to meet up for some
<
or some pig hunting let me know, I don't think my hunting buddy is going to make it this weekend.

I saw a big pig in 29 the first week of October but haven't been back since. I will let you know if I find anything this weekend. Huntin - I sent you an email

Hey guys I have been off of this site for a while and out of hunting, but I am trying to make my way back into action. I would really like to experience this FHL experience, but do not know the current situation? Do you have to be military? Does it count if you are a veteran? Anyway if someone would pipe in on this I would appreciate it and if I could tag along to this area I would appreciate it even more

I was planning to do some scouting on Sunday at FHL (I still have half a pig in the feezer from an October hunt). I'd like to join you on Sunday. I'd be happy to help you with spotting/dragging/field dressing/skinning.

What time and place would you like to meet on Sunday?

I'd love to hear reports from all of you hog hunters if you happen to see any nice bulls. I'm headed out to FHL on X-mas day for the last elk hunt of the season, and am getting a little excited. I've thought about this hunt every single day since my wife told me I drew and can hardly believe that it is only 10 days away. Have any of you ever hunted the primitive weapons only areas (29 and 30 I think)? Wondering if I have to go out and buy a muzzleloader "just in case" (good excuse to tell the wife, right?) before the season kicks off. Thanks for any reports, they are much appreciated! PheasantHunter.

PheasantHunter,
Training Areas 29 and 30 are shotgun(slugs only), muzzleloader and archery only. They are walk in only. You park your vehicle outside the gates of TA 29 and 30.

I made it to FHL today (Dec 18) around 9am for scouting trip. The weather was really bad when I started out from the Bay Area. I was hoping the rain and wind would pass by the time I got to FHL. It did not. It was raining steady and the wind was pretty strong.

I saw about 5 anterless deer on the way to the main gate while driving on Jolon road.

While checking in at the check station, I saw 2 guys skinning a large elk (I've never hunted elk, so compared to deer carasses that I have seen, this was about twice the bulk).

Did not see any elk on the way to my assigned TA 19. Did see another anterless deer while driving back from TA 19 in either TA 26 or 27.

When I finally got to 19 and got out of the truck to walk around, I did see what I think to be pig tracks and pig droppings. I could not stay out for more than about 15 minutes because the wind driven rain made it difficult see. The wind seemed to be especially hard in 19.

I did have a bit of an adventure getting into and out of 19. On the way in, I was stopped by law enforement twice. First time was just to check my papers. The second time was because I was taking too long to get to my TA (same officer). Since this was my first time to FHL, I drove slow to look around (beautiful country even in the rain) and I also missed one turn and had to backtrack. On my way out of 19, I had a bit of a challenge with a slippery, muddy downhill turn. Could not get traction for a bit and was headed off the road, but managed to coax the vehicle back with some very slow and small turns.

I'd like to hunt 19 another day but not when it's wet.

Ran into a group of three from L.A. at the check station. They were after pig but had no luck in TA 10 and 13 mainly because muddy and slippery roads prevented them from getting very far (even with 4WD).

Just a reminder about using our military bases for out door sports. FOLLOW THE RULES TO THE LETTER, they mean business. Remember 09/11/01?
Any infraction can mean serious consequences...

I made it out to FHL this past weekend for some pig action. It turned out that all the areas were open to hunting and so I was feeling good about getting into a good area and there not being too many hunters. When I was waiting in line in the morning there were more people that I thought and I guess a line at the gate of guys wanting in to the LPNF and FHL for the pigeon opener. I made it out to an area that I had not been to before, picked a road and picked a ridge and when I started my hike it was first light.

About 15 minutes in to my hike I hear sticks breaking and bushes moving so I stop, wait and listen. After about 15 minutes of watching and listening I begin to hear a grunt.
<
Then some huffs and snorts.... I was above them and had these pigs pinned to a brush that I could see all the way around between 50-100 yards away. I figured they would come out any moment so I just waited. Well after listening to them grunt, huff, and snort for the next 2 hours it turned out that they weren't leaving but bedding down and the noises stopped for another couple of hours.

Finally about noon and I hadn't heard the pigs for a good 3 hours. I was starting to think they snuck out somehow. I threw a couple of rocks in the bushes and didn't hear anything. I heard one stick break a minute later and 10 minutes after that I see a black pig about 200 yards away in the grass. The grass was so high I didn't see him sneak out. He was under a 100lbs. I make my way down there and see two more bigger black pigs. I get closer and there are 6 pigs, one big red pig. I only had a shot on one of the black pigs and passed it up since I thought I could get in position to get the red pig and have an easier time following that one if they all scatered after a shot. I move around a tree and something must have given me away or they caught wind of me and they start making their way down the other way. Then the red pig came back up for another look and stopped broadside about 50 yards in front of me. I was not in the best position but I took the shot standing up.

They scatter and make their way into a big area of brush and over the next hill but I don't see the red one. We I must have missed the shot because I only found one drop of blood and a small spatter about 5 yards from where I shot him. I spent the next several hours searching for blood and crawling through the pigs tunnels looking for any sign of him without any luck.

It rained all night Saturday night and was pouring Sunday. I was planning on going to the same spot on sunday, atfer about 10 yards on the dirt road I was stuck in the mud. Called it a day before Sunrise.

At the window Rannie said there were no pigs taken Saturday. She said they are going to be open next Saturday only.

mikewong - Sorry I didn't read your post until today, too bad you made it out Sunday and not Saturday it cool and cloudy but no rain like Sunday.

PheasantHunter - I've seen plenty of Elk in the impact zone of FHL so maybe check areas like 24. Rannie said that they are in the ASP just outside of 30 and that they cross over, I've been over there a couple of times but I haven't seen them. I've also seen them in the area of Mission Road near the 10/13 area.

I hear a lot of people score on those FHL hunts. Good luck and be sure to post up stories and pics.

Hey everyone! Sorry I been out of the forum for awhile! Thanks Jesse- Hope you had a very Merry Christmas! We're still waiting for you to come by FHL!
<

We were open yesterday for general hunting but since it was the day after Christmas, we only got about 30-40 people even though every training area was open. It rained the past couple of days, yesterday was partly cloudy with a few sprinkles, and it's supposed to rain today. Be careful if you drive up here in the morning, the fog is really thick sometimes. About law enforcement on post, yeah they're pretty strict. Just mainly watch your speed and if you're not sure about the boundaries in your training area or anything else, just give us a call at the game check & we'll help you out. =)

We have the Bull Elk hunt orientation today and their hunt begins tomorrow. General hunting will resume on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. You can pre-register to hunt the weekend on Friday between 2-5pm. Well, hope to see you all soon!

Hope you all had a good Christmas! Happy New Year!
