What A great hunt, I'm glad to be back home on the couch with beer in hand, but I had a really great weekend, and it's nice to finally put faces and names to some of the guys around this site. Again, thanks Jason, for organizing this event I'm sure the logistics on something like this can be a headache, but it really was fun. Jesse thanks for all your help, and for showing me the ropes, I'm glad to have my first wild pig resting comfortably in the fridge, couldn't have done it without you, I'll keep an eye out for for you at work. I hope everybody made it home safely, and hope that a few more pigs were taken on the evening hunt. Already looking forward to next year, count me in, cardio conditioning starts tomorrow...

My pig weighed, by estimates from the people who lugged it up the hill (David Sabovich and me), at around 800 pounds. However, what I dropped off at the butcher, minus the heart and backstraps, weighed 81 pounds. That actually puts a live weight on it of around 190, a dressed weight of 150, and a skinned and headless weight at the 81 +/- about 4 pounds of backstraps. The cutters on this dry sow actually looked like baby teeth, so it couldn't have been more than a year or two old...Backstraps for dinner tomorrow. Story about the hunt tomorrow, when my hands begin to function again.

That thing worked perfect. It even attracts others who help skin and cut everything for ya:) Just hang a pig, u turn around and it's quartered in your cooler before you can get your knife out

It was a great hunt. Lots of fun and lots to learn. Thanks to Jason for setting it up and XD and L2H for trying to help me get a pig. I'll definitely be back next year.

Maybe I should change my name to SnakeKiller since I did get Jesse a rattlesnake.

I think it was 8 George. Eric (XDhunter), Rich Mellot, Dave from Sacramento, Carl (CrapsVC), Jason's dad, Adam, Nick (Pierpoint), bohunter3.

If anyone wants to send me any pics they have I can include them in the video I shot of Tejon this past weekend. They can be pig pics or anything you have from the ranch. I know someone even got a shot of the condors flying. Email me them or post them here and I can grab them off the post. Thanks.

JMS, I know 2 goofballs who were 10 yards from a pig and one of them wasn't aware of the hog and the other guy was tossing dirt over at him to get him to look his way to see the hog. They got the hog too.

I wish everyone could have taken a pig, especially the new guys. You still can't help but learn a lot on that ranch and see some great scenery and take home some great tales and memories.

Thanks for the rattlesnake Minh and Eric, I'm finally going to get to put a snakeskin backing on my Sky Archery bow. Crotalus oreganus helleri - Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (=Crotalus helleri)

Ok, so heres how my trip went on this hunt. Got up to the ranch with everyone, everyone was excited to get started, so on Fri we set up camp and started hunting. (I think by 12-1pm.) Having never been on the ranch, at first it seemed a little overwhelming. I didnt know where to start, and every place looked good. Spoke to Jesse, and he pointed out the Geghus ridge loop. He was already taking some folks to Squarrel Canyon. Nick (Pierpont) was also going to drive up on the same loop as me , so we went in oppsite directions to meet in the middle. Im driving slow, stopping looking for a few hours, but nothing but COWS. I found a bedding area on the back side of the ridge, but its empty. I ran into Nick and he was having the same luck I was. But hey its midday it'll get better I tell myself. Then I see a coyote, a skunk, some deer, but no pigs. Night was coming on Fri, I had tried all I could think of, even stopped and talked to a land owner, who was friendly and point me in a direction. I got to where the land owner directed and Craps, is there with his son, they just saw some pigs running, but not me.

I set up at another place near by and as dark is coming, I hear something coming through the woods to water near by. I start getting ready and... dam its another COW. So now it completely dark , I unloaded my rifle, get in the truck and I head back to camp. Driving in I noticed some eyes reflecting by a watering troft. I stopped my truck and hit the eyes with my flash light. The animal was about 75 yards off the road, I was thinking it might be a pig. Well I had gotten out of the truck and lit it up with my light, the animal stood up, It was a Cougar! and the cat was bigger then me and didnt seem to impressed with me either. The male cat just walked along the field, stopping to watch me a few times. I thought it was pretty cool, since I've never seen one in the wild (and I had gotten back in my truck).
Got back to camp, was a little stressed because I didnt see any pigs and a few folks had already gotten some, or at least saw them. The next morning got up and was going to go with Jesses and Nick, but passed because the landowner told me where the pigs had passed through from bedding. I was hoping Jesses wouldnt be upset, because he was trying to help so much.
So I drive up to the (Hot) area, and NOTHING! Now I'm pretty stressed, thinking I should have went with Jesse and Nick. Well I located a area with water and decided to sit on it, besides it the first water spot without COWS,(Did I mention all the COWS) I sit down for about 10 minutes, looked at my watch and realized it was only 7am Sat. That kinda calmed me down cause I already thought it was later in the day. While sitting, I realized I forgot my shooting sticks at the truck, so back to the truck. I just pulled my shooting sticks out of the back and started to walk back to my spot, when I look and see a pig jogging through the tall grass about 100 yrds away. I dropped my sticks, took aim and shot. I thought I hadnt followed through on my shot but, the Pig went down, rolled over and stopped. Now I'm excited! Then I remember Jesse saying rack another one in, just in case they run. It was on cue and the pig got up to run. I fired again and she went down again, But I thought missed, she got up again, I fired, she went down and rolled around again. Then I jogged up to her and put a final round in the head to finish her. When I looked I had screwed my first shot up and hit her in the right ham, and broke her back leg. The other shots had missed, going overtop of her as she was falling down. So even with all my screw ups I got lucky and got one. I had a heck of a time loading her in my truck alone , but was lucky enough to be able to have to drag her down hill only 50 yrs to my truck. Just got back from the butcher (Sorry Meat Cutter) The ham was toast, but still got 70 lbs of meat total when he was done. I cant say enough about how hard everyone tried to help folks get a pig. Jesse was all over trying to get one for everyone, Im surprised he had a chance to try for one himself. Thanks again everyone, I cant wait till next year! Here is the pig I shot. It was a little after 10am on Sunday and we were on our way back to camp. Jason saw it and offered me the shot. I asked if he was sure, and he said yes. There are very few hunters who on the last day of a hunt, would offer to let someone they had met just two days before, take the shot on a pig they saw first. This could have easily been Jason's hog.

Jason takes great pictures. The gun and the pig look great, but the hunter looks like he has not had a bath in 2 1/2 days :)

The 6.5 Grendel pushed a 100gr TTSX bullet which entered 2 inches below and about 2 inches back of her left ear. The entrance wound was small but the exit wound that was in front of the right rib was about 2.5" in diameter.

Special thanks to Jason for putting together such a great hunt. I very much enjoyed hunting with him and his father. All the great people who were there added to a wonderful weekend (and 41st birthday) that I will never forget.

Thanks to everyone,

David

I was hunting with Jim Sabovich, and this Sunday morning was the third trip to the same ravine. We heard pigs two nights in a row. We decided to try it in the am.
I wasn't out of the truck for more than five minutes, when I spotted a pig way down and across the ravine, standing broadside in a small clearing. I verified it was A pig when it turned and opened it's snout. I set up my bipod, sat down, and cranked my scope up to 10 power, to take the shot. It still looked pretty tiny at that power. Just as it turned and quartered away from me, I put the crosshairs on the top of the shoulder, and sent one downrange. I heard it squeal at the hit, so I knew it was a good shot. When I jumped up, I was able to watch it slide down the hill into some brush.
We located the pig, and got the vehicle ready to recover. The pig came to rest at the base of a "V" shaped tree, so no need for a gambrel.
I'm sharing my pic of me with my pig, about a hundred feet down a ravine, off the Powerline Road. It took us a couple hours to get a field-dressing done, then to do a two-man haul up to the truck. I was able to find a road into about 150 feet of my pig, most of it vertical. Thanks to Jim for all his help that morning! Thanks to all the hunters who made this a great trip, and Jason and Jesse, who put it all together.

Jesse, you looking for this? You must of left it in Adam's tent and he stuffed it in my bag when he packed up camp. Let me know how you want me to get it back to you.

That'd be the lost one Minh thanks. I have spare set of gloves so it's not a rush deal. I was hurting Sunday night without it, man did it get cold with that wind kicking up in the canyon.

Here's the girthing chart. Adam's was 40 inches which would put his pig around 200 lbs. ± 10 pounds of the actual weight of the pig. I forget who had the 38 1.2 incher (Dave Stonetower or bchunter3) which would be pushing 190 lbs. on the hoof.

http://www.thepigsite.com/articles/1106/use-heart-girth-to-estimate-the-weight-of-finishing-pigs.

Also Jason's dad's hog had 2 chewed up legs on one side from another critter like a cougar, boar or bear had jumped him. I got there after they had cut the legs off so did anybody get any pics of that pig with the damaged wheels? The hog with the crutch that got shot? :big-grin-aqua: .

5 of us stayed late Sunday, Jim S. and I hunted Sunday afternoon and evening in Bear Trap Canyon and no joy. Same for Sol and Minh.

Huge thanks to Eric and Sol for taking the new guys and those who had never been to Tejon before around and showing them the hogs and how to glass them up and maneuver on them.
