Here's some fairly recent photo's from a friend of a friend....and the story goes:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
These two bulls were locked when the guy came upon them.  The one on the left was already dead, and he shot the one on the right.  I guess F&W is letting him keep them both because the other one died of natural causes and he's getting them mounted together like he found them.  Must have been close to a road, that's too much weight to pack.[/b]

That's for sure, would have been something to see those bulls going at it. If by some fluke I ever run across such a scenario, it's good to know that I might get to keep both racks if one of the animals is already dead from natural causes. Would be best just to let one expire naturally which would be a tough thing for me to do. I'd want to put it out of it's misery but the law's the law.

The guy who sent me that photo drew a PIW tag in Nevada for deer this year. Didn't end up with a monster but he got a respectable 4x4 up in NW NV last day of the 3rd season and that was after chasing 'em during archery and muzzleloader season. If you want to see that photo, I can PM it to you since I don't want to post it without his permission.

WOW. Those are two nice elk. Every year it seems like pics pop up of deer locked up. But I have never seen a pic of two elk locked up before. Thanks for posting it. I bet it took a herculian effort to get those two out of the woods..

Thanks again.

man i feel sorry for the poor taxidermist who's taking on the job of mounting those things. those capes are in some sorry shape and add on top of it the weird configuration of antlers and heads. gonna be a tough job. i would like to see the finished product. interesting to say the least.

Kinda makes those locked whitetails that you see all the time look kind of puny don't it?

How do you mount something like that anyway? Do you have to custom make forms for it?

I believe a 16 year old kid smacked it in Utah or Colorado or some western state this year. If I remember correctly, the animals were in plain sight, close to a road. A crowd gathered F&G was called and asked if anyone had an elk tag. A lady said yup, my boy does and fetched him from school. Although he wanted to "hunt", he understood he'd be doing a service, AND was told, obviously, that he could keep the dead elk head too, since he had nothing to do with it's demise. I don't remember which mag I read it in, I subscribe to about 10, good story.
