I know Santa BArbara County Outfitters had their first special hunt August 10-11. I'm just curious to see how everyone did out there. Any information would be appreciated as I'm scheduled to hunt the property on Aug. 16-17 and I've never been there. Thanks

Tim,

Jeph and I went there yesterday as you know for a little coyote hunting. We could smell hogs as we were walking between stands and saw signs like rutting and cow chips that had been flipped. Of course we didnt walk through where they were supposed to be holed up and chase them off, but Tom did point out the crops they were tering up and the water holes where they visit. I have no doubt they are in there; let us know how you do!

We ended up seeing 3 coyotes and I caught a frey fox on video for a few seconds before he bugged out. We ony got a shot off at one coyote that was 400+ yards out as we were setting up on a stand. It had breakfast in his mouth so I didn't even try calling .... well, he got to enjoy that breakfast.

After lunch we found a hill side with a bunch of ground squirrels that provided us with a little target practice for a couple hours.

It is fairly cool there first thing in the AM and warms right up after the sun burns the fog off. There are some big hills you will be going up and down so I would recommend a few snacks for energy and plenty of water to drink. Also, I didn't have covers on my scope and the fog we were in really had moisting condensing on my scope lenses and my barrel. If you dont have scope covers you might also want to bring a good lens cloth.

Hey Heath, thanks for the information. Glad to hear you saw stuff. Thanks for the pointers on the fog, I never even thought of that. Sounds like the pigs are there. I'll give you a full report when we return. I better head out and start getting in shape. Thanks again.

Switch - I was up there last week just looking over the property from the road and it is close to the ocean but as soon as the fog burns off it gets hot! Looked like a great property, we saw a lot of fresh pig tracks just off the road. One set of tracks from a BIG HOG at the entrance to the last field. Good luck on your hunt and be sure to report back, we have the weekend on the 27-28 and would love to hear some success stories before we head up there.

bjake21, thanks for the information. I'll definitely report back regarding our hunt and relay any information that can help you guys out. It was good to hear that there is food and water on the property and it sounds like the habitat is pig-perfect! Thanks again

Switch - have you been to the fields yet? If not there are some good photos off the google aerial photo program (free). If you want, email me, I have most of them saved on my comp. pig_guide is also working on getting the ones he has with his notes (boundaries and hot spots).

Has anyone hunted with SBC Outfitters on their Lompoc Ranch in the past? Just wondering if there are any JHOers that have some stories/photos of their hunts. I haven't seen anybody chime in with all this talk about their August special the past couple of weeks.

Home taking a shower, changing clothes and going back for round#2.

Day 1 was a fiasco. Bad day. Today, 0613, we seperated the 2 hunters to seperate points, when Mitch, nailed a nice 150 class sow at 0615 at 80 yds, clean thru the head. 9 pigs in group, bunched up with another group 20 minutes later.

More story and photo's to come.

Okay. Here's the run down. First. This is not an easy hunt by any stretch of the imagination. Period.

I know this ranch well, and where the animals are. Please, if you are on an upcoming hunt, and I tell you you need to be " Here " all day, put aside the apprehension, and sit tight. The critters are there as will be attested to by my guys from this weekend.
We had a mix up on day 1, but, day 2 brought sweet success with very little ambiant light out. But, the pig was down and the hunt continued. At last light, another larger Boar, came out from below where we processed the 1st pig, running up the hill, stopping to observe the former's gut pile, and made it across the fence as the shot hit the dirt, directly under it's chest at 300yds. Oh well.

The Deer are being seen as well as the pigs. The pigs are in large numbers. Please. Pack yer food and water in with you as you will need to stay put all day if you want success.

The weather was beyond foggy. We are a mile from the ocean and the fog is very heavy and wet. Scope covers are a must. Tick repellant is very useful out here as we have a bumper crop of the little critters this year.

Try to bring a game cart for removing your animal from the field. We took the pig yesterday, way in the back and if it wasn't for my game cart, Mitch would have been dragging till at least 2 pm.

There are no more do-over hunts as this is it. It is harvest or don't harvest. Sorry guys. Mitch will have pictures of his pig up shortly. OH!

And please take note of it's pointy ears and LONG nose. It is feral like I've said i deal with. No planters on MY ranch.
