now obviously this is a bit tonge in cheek, but long range rifles are not mandatory for ELK!
,I go to the local ranges on a regular basis,
I usually have my 35 whelen, and 450 marlin rifles along, sometimes my 375 H&H carbine, sometimes, my 340 wby mag, but IM constantly being told at local ranges that my choices in rifles for hunting ELK are all wrong by the younger guys, with thier 270-7mm-300 mags , now I generally smile and ask how many ELK they have killed, what the areas looked like, how far the ELK went after they were hit, etc.
about 90% of the time those young guys either have thier first hunt coming up, or they might have 1-2 ELK to thier credit.
now Ive hunted ELK for over 40 years , in several states and have only killed a bit over 3 dozen ELK personally,(some years I lucked out and got two(different states) but Ive seen well over 100 elk killed from guys in our group., Ive dressed out many if not most of those ELK. and if Ive learned something, its that its not the caliber of the rifle used so much as the guy behind the rifle that matters in the end result.
in 40 years of hunting ELK I can remember only a very few that were taken by ANYONE in camp that were shot at over 250-275 yards.
my 35 whelen and 340wby have both killed well over a dozen elk each with a single shot, with never a problem. SO Ive GOT SOME idea WHAT WORKS.
AND THE FACT IS THAT IN THE STEEP CANYON COUNTRY IVE USUALLY HUNTED EVEN SEEING AN elk PAST 200 YARDS IS RARE!
ID be perfectly equiped with my 450 marlin BLR or 340wby or 35 whelen, the rifles caliber is just not as important as the skill used in getting into the herd and selecting the shots, and the ability to locate the herd.Ive even used a 45/70 with hot cast loads on a couple,
if pressed Im sure I could kill ELK with a 44 mag carbine, ELK are just not that hard to kill once you get into a decent angle and range, its GETTING INTO THE POSSITION THATS HARD.
find something you shoot well, something fast and accurate out to 300 yards with enought power to kill effectively and youll do fine, its been a darn rare hunt where shots over 250 yards were even considered, and thats not due to lack of long range skill with a rifle, it due to the fact ELK are not STUPID and rarely stand out in the open!

wont that 340 weatherby reach "out there"? i am one of the rookies. i shot mine with a 30.06 at 150 yards. my bro shot his the next day at 100. when i hit mine, i heard the PLOK! of the bullet. the bull looked stunned. and started to rotate. i jacked another round in and aimed for the same spot. PLOK! it dropped. it was already dead with the first 180 nosler partition. the second bullet was not needed. i grouped 1" on the side of that beast. both bullets hit the same spot but came out differently. i tend to shoot till they drop. (limit suffering, stuff like that). i agree. a bull elk is so huge, i dont know how anyone misses. i have laid down the rifle. i want to get CLOSE, so i have been mastering my bow. i am good on a bull elk out to 60 yards easy. now if i can only draw, stalk, triumph over buck fever...

i never saw my brother's shot. i was the cow elk, moving about, cow calling, trying to keep my hidden brother between me and the bull. it zigged, and i zagged. i was hopping about, until i heard his 7mm bark....game over. the kid never misses.

I shoot a 340wby , 35 whelen,and a 450 marlin for the same reasons
acurate rifles with heavy bullets, yes I bought the 340wby when I was much younger intent on having the best elk combo I could afford, yeah I felt long range capacity was critical at age 20,.... IVE learned a bit about real world elk hunting in the last 41 years.
Ive practiced shooting for years at 400 -500 yards, but the more I hunt the closer I can get to the elk and the better my shot placement tends to be...currently the 450 marlin BLR and the 35 whelen, see just as much use as the 340 wby

If you can kill an elk at 400 yards, can't you kill it at 50-100 yards with the same "long range" rifle?

340 MAG, You didnt know you cant use these rifle/calibers? Everyone knows that...DUH! So your tellin me that 100+ years ago, thousands of elk were killed with the 35 Whelen, 35 rem, 30-30, 45-70...even black powdered Hawkins etc. and not the 270 wsm or 300wsm or even the 300 wby mag and 325 wsm, WOW I thought to be a hunter, in the past or present, I had to have one of these "super awsome" fast modern magnums.

And YOUR sayin that its shot placement, hard work and knowing what your doing, instead of carrying a "howitzer" in the field and pumping multiple rounds in an animal, AND THAT I could kill them with 1 well placed shot, and at closer ranges? WOW I LEARN SOMETING NEW EVER_A_DAY!!!!

Maybe I'm missing something (and I understand about the 35 and the 450 Marlin) but the 340 Weatherby is a long range rifle. And its actually a great rifle to shoot a 225 - 250 grain bullet at large game at long distances. I believe thats why Weatherby made it. As for the 375 H&H, that still shoots very well at +200 yards so I really wouldn't call that a brush gun either.

Anyone that says their 270 is better than a 340 is wrong. :stir pot:

.35 Whelen, 450 Marlin, and 340 Weatherby Mag? The only problem I see wrong is if you are halfway to Colorado and found out you forgot your ammo back home in California. Good luck finding ammo.

hahah. i have done that! .257 weatherby. i flew from san fran to el paso. forgot ammo. i called the ep gun shop and he said he has a few boxes. i calm down, fly in, go straight to the shop from the airport. they sold the only 120 gr partition boxes! my brother rummaged about the house and found 2 cartridges. 2! so i off i go. i shot a mulie with one and still have the other shell. i bought a new box, so now i have 21 shells. i shoot my beater '06 now. those 21 shells are going to be around for awhile.

back on topic, i feel the same way couse does. i would go with the .340 wtby, and just hunt normally as you would. you never know. the biggest bull elk of you life could creep by at 300 yards. the 340 would plant it.

You can even kill them at 30 yards with a sharp stick.
