Was on a ranch that my buddy's family owns, trying to fill that last pig tag for the year.
No one hunts the ranch, and i've seen pigs, deer, and turkey on it.

anyways i was bored so i threw on the foxpro to see if i could whack a coyote while taking a breather.
threw on the inter howl, and about 10 seconds later i see about 10 heads poke over the hill. i was like "what the hell is that?!"
after they poked over, i hit the blacktail fawn distress and some more howls, and they came in even closer. there was one cow inparticular that seemed to want to come right on it, but the others stayed a bit back. i figure they came to about 200 yards of me. i was on the sticks, but was able to get my camera out and record a few minutes of shaky video.

check out the clip. (need a recent version of quicktime to view)

my buddy had told me about a heard of elk in the area. but i didnt expect to see them, much less on the ranch.
i counted 18 total. as you can see on the video, a pretty balanced mix of youngsters, cows, bulls. i dont know much about elk, but seems like a healthy herd. cant really say where the ranch is, but its in the central coast'ish area. :)

That's a great find but doesn't that look like a perfectly cut skull cap with two nail or screw holes above the eye sockets? Looks like someone either:
a. Got divorced and the wife threw the horns in to the deepest canyon she could find
b. Poached the elk then thought better of it after mounting the rack on the barn

yeah you might be right. i gave the antlers to the property owner, but they werent home. point being i cant reinspect them anytime soon. maybe there is a story behind them? wish i would have looked at those holes better now. i just figured it was some sort of duct or normal hole for the skull.

although the plate did look pretty rough, didnt look like it would have been done with a saw.
