While trimming some of the fat off on a hog steak I noticed something that looked like a stick stuck into the meat. After cutting away some gristle I saw what it was. My Nosler 180 grain E Tip. I shot this hog at 300 yards. As you could see the bullet did not mushroom very well. This came out of my 300 WBY. The velocity at the muzzle is about 3200. I am not very impress with the results. The bullet does group very well in my gun but I think I might be going back to the barnes bullet. I am sure glad I that I did eat the darn thing.

Where did the bullet enter and stop? Did the animal die quickly? Was there a blood trail?

Same bullets that I load in my Remington 700 in 308, I agree, although they group VERY well I'm not impressed with what I see here. That being said every animal I have shot with it has dropped in it's tracks, all good shots though.

No I had to put in two more in him, the bore went close to 300 Lbs. The second one was on the run and the third one was behind the neck. The hog ran 150 yards. I found two bullets entries. One behind the shoulder which I am sure that it exit. The second was behind his rump. Both bullets hit major vitals. The rump shot broke his hip and traveled out the front rib cage. The shoulder shot went through and through. I have killed plenty of hogs but I was not very impress with the E tip. It did kill the hog but that is just copper bullets. lead bullets are much better. The barnes seem to do better but I know the hogs are just tough. I have rarely killed a hog that went over 10 yards.

Well in my book it looks like the barnes mushroomed much better than the Nosler. How far of a shot did you take and where did you hit the boar.

110yrds, hit it the shoulder and stuck in between gristle and skin

Looks like the barnes does a fine job. I will be shooting barnes for now on. I have some already loaded up. Don't get me wrong Nosler makes a great bullet, I have taken many big game with the partition but with the E tip I am not very impress. As you could see in the photo the bullet did not mushroom at all. The only thing that was missing was the E tip. The bullet looks like a full metal jacket.

My first kill with the etip was a devastating pass thru at 30yrds. I thought the etip was my replacement for barnes. My recovered big game and etips beyond 100yrds has the same dissapointing results. They dont expand well beyond 100yrds. All these nonlead ammo are like a full metal jacket made for war. If they want more tag animals and less injure or loss game they better rethink. I rather have more big game then a condor due to penciling bullets. Though a dissapointing find, great find.

Here is my Hornady Superformance GMX 308. Shot a boar at 400yds and it still expanded really good. I also shot another boar at 160yds with the same bullet and it expanded even more but I can't find it right now. Give them a try they group really well and they priced better than the barnes.

Well interesting find.

Interesting after doing some more research on the bullet I noticed it was much smaller that my 30 cal. The bullet was actually a .277 diameter, a 270 caliber and the bullet looked very similar to a barnes and not an E tip. The bullet that I recover had 3 bans on it like the barnes bullet. Apparently some one else took a shot at this hog that I killed. Now I don't know what to believe. I am sure they are both good bullets but after doing some investigation I found that the bullet I recovered does not even come close looking like a Nosler E tip. The E tip has no bans on it. When I looked at some barnes bullets I use on my 7 mag there were 3 bans. I am almost sure that this is a barnes bullet. Well you could look at the picture that I posted.

I hate copper bullets...almost every pig I ve shot had to follow with one more...core-loc is the best for pigs...one shot and the pigs done...my opinion and experience

looking back at the pics, looks like the barnes has 4 rings, ill try and find it and confirm and the hornady has 3 rings with a taper on the butt end like the one in your pics. Crazy to think someone else put a shot on the pig, wonder how long its been in there.

That was the only thing that I noticed different was taper bevel on the back part of the bullet. But other than that I thought it was a barnes. My buddy thought maybe someone shot that hog from a long distance and maybe that is why the bullet did not span very well.

Barnes .270 in Federal Trophy load. 250lb boar around 70 yards. Single shot, instant drop. Similar end result with same bullet/load on a 300 lb'er last year.

I have had excellent success with Etip and TSX bullets on deer and pigs in my 300 win mag and 264 win mag. My buck from two years ago was shot in the neck at 310 yds and it never got up(great mushroom, just like in jdm49's photo). I use 62 grn TSX hand loads in my 223 AR and when shot behind the ear or neck the pigs drop where they stand.
