I have been meaning to buy a digital camera for a while now. Looking for one above 3 mpix. I don't want some professional grade kind, but nothing cheap either. I was thinkg about the Canon A70, not badly priced and some good reviews. I was wondering what you guys thinkg of this camera, if not this then what would you guys recommed? something around the price range of $300-$400. Thanks for the help.

I bought the Canon S400 from Dell's web site. That was the best price I could find, even better than I could find on ebay. Was about $420 taxes and shipping included. I am very happy with it. Nice and small, great for hunting trips. It's a 4.1 megapixel with a 3x zoom. Would be nice to have a stronger zoom, but that starts to cost ya !.

Good luck.

I have a Olympus C-740. It's 3.2 Megapixel and has a 10x optical zoom. It was in the mid $300's from Costco. I probably could have found a better price on the net, but I didn't spend the time. The C-750 is 4 Megapixel and from what I've seen you can find it for about $100 more than the 740. It also had a 10x optical zoom.

The 740 was my first Digital, and is very easy to use.

Thats my

I went looking last night and got a good education on what I should be looking for. There are so many ways to go. I'm not much of a photographer but would like to start and it was suggested that I look at the Olympus Stylus 300 or 400. Most of the major stores have them for $399 but I found this link on the net for a lot less. It's nice because it is weather proof which could be important when hunting in the elements.

Has anyone bought from these guys B4? I like the C740 with the 10X zoom but it cost more and I think I just need something to point and shoot. Any suggestions?

Has anyone considered the Olympus 4000. You can use it as a trail cam, using the RS-232 board from Pixcontroller. And it's not much more than what some people are spending on D-380's on Ebay. I've seen some D-380's going for $170.00. And you can purchase the 4 megapixel Olympus 4000 for $259.99 or 269.99.

A friend of mine has been talking to me about building him a trail cam. And he wants as much megapixel as possible for the least price. Of course! The Olympus 3000's are ore money than the 4000's

The Olympus 3000's are going for $339.99 on the cheapest site I can find. At Infinity Cameras the 4000's are $259.99 and at Big On Digital they are $269.99. That's only $90.00 or $100.00 more for twice the megapixels.

I wonder about the flash on these units if they would work with Jon's board like other Olympus cameras.

They have the Aux power input just like the D-380 too.

It's bigger than most, but I bought the Sony MVC-CD250. It actually burns all the pictures to a mini cd instead of a memory stick. It takes great pictures and when a cd is full I slap another in.

good things:

CD is my permanent storage for all pictures
different modes - single picture, 3 picture blast, 6 picture blast, movie mode
battery lasts a LONG time- like 100 pictures or so (unlike my friends that seem to get 10 pictures and are digging for more batteries)
Superb clarity for a 2mpx camera 3-5mpx available
3 flash levels
a bazillion shutter and focal settings
telephoto lens, wide angle lens, and filters available
6x zoom lens stock.

Bad things

Large size
too much time between the flash going off and the picture being burned

I just bought the Olympus C750UZ and am very happy with it. I looked over the Fuji 5000 and the 3800 and also the 740UZ and went for this one. It's easy to use and more importantly it has the 10x zoom. Cost me $429 at Beach camera. The 740UZ goes for $339 but for less than 100 bucks you get a 4MP camera with a remote control, a more durable frame, flash shoe, and sound. Check it out.

thanks guys for the responses, it been really helpful. I decided to go with the Canon A80 instead of the Olympus c750 for a number of reasons. I read a lot of reviews and the only positive thing I could find that the canon couldn't match with the Olympus was the 10x optical zoom. The other thing is the Oly uses an xD card, which is more expensive than compact flash. Here are some positives I found about the A80. It has a pretty long battery life, adapter lenses can be used to increase the optical zoom, it uses compack flash cards (cheap now a days), and has much more optinons to play with in manual mode (which I find to be more important than a 10X optical zoom, also its a $100 cheaper than the c750. Don't get me wrong the C750 is a great camera, but I found the A80 to suit me better and more cost effect. I will post some pics as soon as Fed Ex brings it.

Have you looked at the Canon G2 or G3? An great little camera. The G3 is the same as the G2 only about half the weight and will take a 3 minute video. Great starter camera and will last a long time to come. The battery life is great, I get about 300 pictures to a charge on my G2.

Edit: The 300 pics to a charge is with the lcd screen on and flash going about half the time.

I think the best camera for the $ for outdoor/ hunting use is the Olympus C-750UZ. I have the 730 and it is great. With an added lens you can reach out to 15x zoom with these cameras.

I am just about to buy one for work. Looks like I have decided on the Sony MV-cd500. It has a Carl Zeiss lens and a neat 3 point focus system. It also burns the pics to mini CD and even takes movies. Great reviews and online it has been dropping in price. It is a bit more thatn your range, but at $468 it is getting down there.

Whatever you decide, you should look at the NEXTTAG website below to find the best price and warranty.
