Looking for an "Accessible" Pig Hunt

Hey Guys

I just forund this forum while looking for information on hog hunting in CA.  My self and a couple of other members of Arizona Challenged Sportsmen would like to do a 2 or 3 dqy hunt for pigs in CA.  We are experienced hunters but know little or nothing about pig hunting or where to find them.  We are assuming we will need to go on a guided hunt of some kind.  The guides I have contacted are spooked bythefact we are in wheelchairs.  

Any one have suggestions of guides or outfitters we might contact?

Wheelchair hunter, hmmm..., pig hunting unlike deer hunting is usually spot and stalk, spotting should be doable but the stalking could be a problem for you,however, if you guy's could get a disabled hunter classification from ca. fish and game you could shoot from the vehicle. some guides in ca. have you hunt from a bench seat in their pickup truck so that might work for you also I'll bet the Tejon ranch in Lebec Ca. would arrange a weekend hunt for you, pig-o-rama's are from fri. to sunday and only cost $300. unguided, if you work it out with them I would be glad to volunteer my time and my 4x4 for the weekend, let me know if I can help , Bill  760-728-0716

I have a CA Disabled Hunter Permit already and I'm sure the other guys cound get one pretty quick.  I"ll contact those folks you mentioned and see if maybe we can set something up.  Thanks for the offer to help.

I knew a hunter before that was disabled and there was a guide who was able to help him, his name is Eldon Bergman, if you look him up and give him a call, he might be able to help you guys out, I know that his prices are very reasonable, you can find his name and number on the CA DFG website which is http://www.dfg.ca.gov.  And like usahunteris saying, with a disabled license you can shoot from a vehicle, good luck on your hunt and if we can help on anything, let us know, that's why we are here for.

Guerry, first off, my hat is off to you for getting out there and hunting. Good for you! The reason I'm posting is because I wanted to let you know that I would definitely NOT recommend Eldon Bergman to anyone, anytime to use as a guide. Tried him once on a deer hunt, and when I got to his place, found that I would be hunting with three other guys (after he took my money). The next morning, he basically took us on a long walk, after daybreak, in public land around Pogo, all together in a group. I'm sure we didn't make any of the guys who had hiked in there before daybreak very happy, just walking thru their hunting area way after daybreak. See, the problem also was that the area was already full of hunters. What was promised as a private hunt was all but that. He also insisted on cash and told us not to tell anyone we spoke with in the field that he was a private guide. This whole thing smelled to high heaven, and I bailed out before the evening hunt (which was to be in the same place). I couldn't stand being around this guy (who ripped me off) anymore, and the other guys were complaining as I had about what we had been led to believe was a hunt on private land (not a private guided hunt on public land...could've done that myself). His refined techniques for finding deer (I jumped one doe in 15 ft. high chapparral that I was brush busting) was throwing rocks down into canyon and yelling "here buck, here buck". I am not kidding, this is the honest to gosh 1st hand account truth. Anyway, I called the Fish and Game and they told me that they had had complaints in the past about this particular "guide", and the best thing for me to do was write the Fish and Game high chieften, which I did (this was approx. 18 years ago). Never heard back from the Fish and Game on this, and I'm suprised this guy is still "guiding". Maybe he got his hand slapped and straightened up since. But I'd never give him another dime, I was zero impressed with him. Since that wonderful (not) experience, I have killed 15 deer without a guide here and in Colorado, and 9 hogs, only two of those on guided hunts, all in Monterey County. There are numerous other guides in the area I would seek out before this one, that's for sure. I've heard a lot of good things about Boaring adventures and I've personally had a really good experience with Tom Willoughby and another good one with Don Ingalls. Please consider those guys. Wheelchair hunter, another guide to check out is Frank Morasci with Mustang Guide service.  You will get a real hunt with an honest, hard working guide for a fair price.   On a trip last may Frank showed me a picture of a gentleman with one arm and one leg who shot a huge boar with a BOW.  Yes a BOW.  He would pull and relaese the arrow with his teeth.  Amazing if you ask me.  I don't know if Frank does this type of trip often as this guy was a friend of one of his guides but its may be worth asking.  Freedivr2, welcome to the best forum on the net, and without all the badmouthing.  Hope you got my email.  We'll have to get back after those makos again soon.  Take Care,

SDHNTR, thanks for the welcome, this is a pretty good forum. I promise to post some helpful things (such as how to make a lightweight adjustable gambrel out of shark hooks, cable and schedule 40 PVC, where to pick up inexpensive, long lasting, lightweight block and tackles, and where to get remnant breathable camo material for boning and game bags) next week. I picked up a lot of good info from a warden who gave a 1 1/2 hour presentation on game care in the field (he backpacks out his Elk and deer without horse) at a Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game Hunter Safety Instructor Conference I attended in May. I will pass on that info to this forum as soon as I have the time to put together a couple of sketches.
