HI i am new to hog hunting and mainly just interested in using dogs. I have two gamedogs that i would like to get started catching in the pen but can't seem to find anyone around here (santa cruz ca.) with one. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. I ordered there cut gear and it should be here in about a week or two. If any one with: baypen, veteren catch dog, baydog or any info at all im all ears.

I primarily run hogs with hounds, but had a couple of catchdogs in the past, so I'll qualify my comments as being somewhat limited...

It is my impression that baypens are not really advertised much, and are learned of through a friend-of-a-friend sort of arrangement. With as many hoghunters down in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties as there are, I can't imagine there not being many in your area.

I'd suggest trying to become friendly with some hunters local to your area, and you may get yourself an invite.

There was a baypen event a couple of years ago in the Central Valley, but I'm not too sure if a followup was ever held.

Besides the baypen event that Rifleman refered to is the only one I have ever heard of and I don't think they had a follow up event either. The two gamedogs you have I'm assuming are pits or bulldogs? You are going to find it even harder to find a catch pen in California. If I'm assuming correctly about your dogs, I wouldn't worry about having to get them started in a pen. If they got it you'll know the first time they see a hog. Not knocking your dogs but catchdogs are a dime a dozen. You need to get a dog that will find the hogs first. Catching is the easy part.

Agreed, Anything that can run and bite just about can be taught to catch. It's a good strike dog that's hard to come across and priceless when you do.
