Hey, Jason here from Monterey, CA... Me and a buddy are experienced duck hunters.. but have been trying to get our first pigs for quite some time now.. Were looking to find out what were doing wrong. We have been all around Carmel Valley, King City, Paicines, up and down Jolon road looking for ranchers who could let us jump on they're land for a fee, except we keep coming home unsuccessful
<
.. Today we went over to New Idria, pretty spooky place and the Welcome To Hell signs weren't helping! Anyways, with the weather wet and the ground muddy driving up that mountain in the vehicle we were in didn't seem to safe, ended up turning around just ahead of the old post office and made our way out.. Any pig hunters out there that want to set up a
<
hunt? Or possibly could tip us off to someone whos charging a trespass fee? ...Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks alot

go guided bro and pop the cherry,by the time you add up all the wear and tear and gas and time
and frustration, it may be worth it to pony up the cash and put one down?just a thought,
plenty of qualified guides here on the site that would love to help you bag a hog, or jump in on
one of the hogacosts they got going on at tejon, those seem to produce extremly well and
you can do it relitavely cheap,
<
post up when ya put um down, and keep at it

Or... You are close enough to Fort hunter ligget, or Cam roberts. Both those places shoot more pigs than any other public hunting areas. good luck

I am in the same boat. Been doing a lot of hiking and not much shooting on public land throughout Nor Cal. I am going on 3 years now chasing hogs and have not seen one except for private land the surrounds FHL. I will keep trying though and one of these days I intend to fill my freezer with pork.

Guided hunts are really starting to interest me so I can learn from a pro what I am doing wrong but I think if you stick to public land you just have to put in time and be patient.

Keep at it. Public land hunts in California are almost guranteed to be a failure. But those that stick to it will eventually nail something. Or just fork over 500 bucks and get a guided hunt. They're almost guranteed to be a success.

Guided hunts are sounding better and better by the day.. Heard nothing but good things about Bryson (Deedy). But forking over 600 buckeroos a pop for a guy like me isnt a walk in the park.. Would feel more like an accomplishment if we found the piggy on our own without a guide.. I got a guys number who said 3 bills to trespass his land... Might tackle that offer... Anyone know some good folks who would charge a trespass fee?

i would think you could get into tejon for about 4bills and change and have a REALLY
good time with lots of hogs, talk with speckmisser when he comes back, he always has some kinda hunt going on up there with us jho, ers, this would be unguided, and you could probably hang
with one of the local guys that hunt it on a regular basis and again REALLY have a great hunt
and more than likely get a shot oppurtunity

savage3006,

Just make sure your 300 dollars don't go to Larry Hamilton. That is what he charges I believe to hunt "his leases".

Good luck on whatever hunt you choose.

If your trying to keep it cheap, looks like your not all that far from Liggett, you can hunt every weekend that they're open for under a " C note"

I started on public land (Los Padres NF), then got my FHL permit. I hunted hard every Sat&Sun for over two months until I finally succeeded. Although it is a lot of work and not a lot of reward, the long-term benefits of bustin' your ass are huge. I learned from my mistakes as to the terrain and cover I was hunting; from all the sign I was seeing, I got confident that I could find the pigs on my own. Sure enough, it paid off -- I got my first all by myself rather than having someone else do all the work.

Obviously we want to put one down and put meat in the freezer, and like hatchet1 said, gotta pop your cherry before you turn blue. But don't give up on hunting places like Roberts or FHL because you will learn a lot. Also, you will meet a lot of hunters and JHOers at those places and learn more from them too, usually for just a 6-pack instead of 6 bills...

Call Chopper, www.birdsandboars.com His reputation will speak for itself. The property is awesome and you'll learn more from him in a weekend than years of stomping around in the brush by yourself. Also, it's not a guranteed hunt, that's for sure. I've to Chopper's place numerous timeskilled hogs and not killed hogs, but you'll have a great time. Good luck - YB

Tejon in May for 463.00......you do it all yourself, and lots of pigs everywhere.

Plus you can talk to the old timers on what they know.

Many cherrys popped at the JHO hunts.

Or save your money for Deedy she's worth it!

From my understanding most of the ranchers have agreements with the guides not to allow hunters in so the guides get exclussive access. This allows them to charge their fees and their suppose to pay the rancher a flat fee or a per pig fee harvested. I hope you find the rancher that has good sign and doesn't play the guide game fulltime. The ranchers want the pigs gone as much as you want to harvest one due to the destruction to grapes or fields with grazing cows and so on. Stick with it, trust me when I say the pay off is worth all the effort. I'm self trained and it took me months of hard hunting just to see a hog when I started. Good Luck

Hang in there, I have been going out almost every weekend on to land in NorCal, I have seen pigs all of twice since Jan 08, but I love going out and will continue. I have planned to take two guided hunts this year, but I would say just get out and have fun.

Good Luck
