I am going to the Tejon hunt and a buddy from work is going too
and he asked me what he needed to bring and I wanted to make sure I don't leave anything out.

1. The apps of course plus hunting lic and pig tag.
2.rifle with scope plus non lead ammo.
3. sleeping bag ground cover food and water with canteen.

4 cammo cloths and knapsack and hat

5. binoculars

6.insect repellant

7. good hiking boots with hiking socks

8. hunting knife to gut pig plus optional carpet knife plus pliers per DFG sugestion to remove the pigs fur hide.

9. I have a grambel he can borrow.

10. a large cooler with ice and dry ice plus large ziplock bags plus an Alaska game bag plus disposable gloves.

I know I am missing something and we can get the jokes out of the way such has bring a teddy bear or some since this is a family site certain unmentionable items.

This is my friends first serious hunt so I don't want him to not have everything he needs.

Thanks;

How about a thousand feet of rope to lift the dead hog from one of those bottomless ravines, canyons, hellholes, drop-offs, cliffs, vertical mountainsides etc. etc. that abound in the Tejon Ranch hunting landscape. If you read the previous posts regarding hog hunts in Tejon.........the guys talk about using hundreds of feet of rope to lift the dead hog out of the abyss. Also, those 20 mile range radios that they sell at Big5 for like $50 when it is on sale. I know that a good long range radio is a must in calling your buddy for help in locating, dragging and lifting your dead hog. Those towering Tejon mountains are good for a dead hog to roll all the way to the bottom.

A good sharpener for your knife instead of pliers. Who does THAT?

Lens cloth for binos and scope. A wind checker is always nice. Range finder?

Really, all you need is a gun, bullets, binos and a knife. All the rest is comfort.

I thought about the rope idea. I am going to bring some for the heck of it. I also have a small winch and am going to try to borrow my buddies rhino to get around out there.

Take it from the guys who have hunted Tejon. You CAN'T BRING ENOUGH ROPE!!!! If you shoot something and it rolls into one of the deep hell holes, you will have to bone it out and pack all the meat out or run a line down and pull it up. Rope is your "Best Friend" at Tejon. Just an FYI....

+1

If you can't get a rope to it, you'll have to quarter and carry it out. A good pack is a must.

and a extra set of lungs and legs. That place is STEEP.

On the good side, tons of hogs!!

Good ideas. I love beer but there is the warning on the regs about not being drunk on the property and that can lead to being kicked out. Also has Archie Bunker said "one can't buy beer one can only rent it". I don't want to stumble around having to get rid of excess beer.

What do you guys think about in terms of a butchering kit commercial kits say Kershaw et al vs brining a hack saw or some other tools?

Thanks;

My first year there speck helped me quarter my hog with his Buck knife. A good sharp knife is all you need in my opinion to get your hog packable. Stop putting so much pressure on your self and have fun! We had some yahoos last year that shared the camp area and drank a little too much all day and 1 of them all most ran over somebody in their truck. They weren't in the hunting group I believe they were members who happened to be there the same weekend. anyway can't wait for this hunt again.

How about a small but bright LED flashlight that are now so cheap at Costco, Home Depot....... and also one of those headlamps with a headband like strap so you don't have to hold your flashlight while skinning, deboning, quartering your pig..........and also so you can have both hands free to grab at some bush while struggling up those very steep, slippery slopes. Don't forget your lotion for poison oak and your suntan lotion for your arms and face and neck. Always, always put a fresh roll of toilet paper wrapped in a plastic bag in your backpack. I learned my lesson long ago when I had to use my white undershirt as toilet paper........now wherever I go, there is a fresh roll of toilet paper in my daypack. Signaling mirror, compass, GPS if you already have one, waterproof matches, a survival aluminum lined blanket that is so thin in the package that you can put it in your pants pocket. I once got lost in the Sierras deer hunting......but I was not too worried about cold exposure because I had my cold weather, windproof jacket, thermal under wear, extra socks, compass, waterproof matches, signalling mirror, water and..............cheese sandwiches in my backpack. I could have survived 3 days up in the Sierras with no problem. Hunting is just a recreation............I don't have to bet my life on the edge doing it. There is nothing like being prepared should you break a leg on some slippery slope and you have to spend a freezing night in the mountains.
