Saw this article in todays SF Chronicle and it reminded me of the good old days.......

When I was just a kid, this was where I got my first blacktail hunting experiences, driving up with my father in the old 64 GTO. He'd fill his blacktail tags when it was private property and I'd tag along with, not hunting at the time, but definitely up for the adventure. We didn't know some of the other hunters on the property, but we ran into Ronald Reagan and Andy Griffith and a few others on seperate occasions.

My dad killed several nice black tail bucks near the Mash and Kung Fu sets on what was referred to at the time as Fox Ranch. We hunted around the Planet of the Apes sets, fished for panfish in some of the streams and in general spent a lot of good quality time back here. Well, I just thought I'd share a little Calif. blacktail/family history that some of you might find interesting. I'm somewhat bummed that the area is now a state park and that there is no hunting allowed whatsoever, unless I was to find a land owner that would allow hunting somewhere in the proximity.

Does ...........or has anyone hunted blacktail in this area, on private property and have any hunting stories to share? I don't believe there is any public land in the area that permits blacktail hunting, but I haven't checked since I don't live in the area these days.

My Dad used to take me hunting in the Santa Monica's when I was kid. Most of it is state park now. Dad says the biggest buck he ever saw was up where the radar station is up on Laguna Peak above Point Mugu. Mike

Hasn't been like that for a long time mrozman. I used to run and hike a lot at the park. Lived in the northwestern section of Malibu a long time, and the whole Santa Monica Mountains is off limits to rifles and handguns. Archery or shotgun is all that's allowed. And now everything there is either parkland or private property. Some of the trails I used to hunt coyotes on are now paths for mountain bikers and joggers/hikers. There's still plenty of deer in the hills. We always had them eating our rose bushes and fruit tree leaves.

If you showed up these days at Malibu Creek State Park with a bolt action rifle, there would be at least 3 LA County Sheriffs cars at your side in a short time. It used to be a real nice area, but those days are gone.

We moved away last Feb and are happy in Nor Cal in B1 zone. Got my first buck on opening day in B2 at Indian Valley.

I'll always have great memories of Malibu, but it just ain't what it used to be.
