A couple of weeks ago my wife and I went north to hunt a management Tule bull elk. We were on the Shamrock Ranch in northern CA. The ranch is about 18000 acres and mountainous as heck. The weather was in the 90s and we had a full moon, both conditions made the hunting a little tough.
On the third day we saw a bull they had been trying to kill for a couple of years. The horn on the right side broke off at the pedicle and was held on by skin alone. The other side grew, fell off and re-grew but the right side stayed in velvet. I passed on shooting him the first time because he didn't present a good angle and the distance was further than I preferred. The next day we found him again in the same area. After a 1/4 mile stalk I took a 44 yard shot and double lunged him. My 52 lb. Mathews with VAP arrows and RazorTrick broadheads proved adequate. The arrow was almost a complete pass through stopping at the vanes on the opposite side of the bull. This was my 20th NA species.
