WAUSAU--A member of the Marathon County Board was fined $2,224 and his hunting privileges were revoked for three years after he was convicted of poaching.

Elroy Koskey, 65, of Hatley, pleaded no contest to three counts of hunting turkeys during a closed season and one count of failure to validate a deer hunting tag.

"I just pleaded no contest. That's all I've got to say," Koskey said Tuesday.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped charges accusing Koskey of reckless endangerment, firing a gun near an occupied home and obstructing an officer.

According to court records, a neighbor of Koskey's told state Department of Natural Resources wardens that she was watching a flock of about 35 wild turkeys on Dec. 3, 1998, when she heard a gunshot.

The neighbor said she saw Koskey pick up three wounded turkeys.

The witness told wardens she shouted to Koskey and asked what he was doing and he replied, "Nothing," court records said.

He then left in his truck but returned to the woman's house a few minutes later and told her he had nothing to do with the dead turkeys, the witness told investigators.

The day after that incident, witnesses reported Koskey shining fields from his truck and shooting a large buck deer, court records said.

Koskey was first elected to the Marathon County Board in 1986. He represents District 22, which includes three townships and part of Ringle.
