Since 1993, there's been some special dumping into the lake at the Rancho Seco Recreational Area.

And no one has complained.

SMUD recently dropped 2,000 pounds of fish into the lake in preparation for this weekend's 2010 Spring Trout Derby, giving anglers of all ages an opportunity to make a catch. Cash prizes will be awarded to those who bring in the heaviest fish.

"It's very much family-oriented," says SMUD's Dace Udris. "We get a big cross-section of people, from little kids to anglers that have a full vest."

Rancho Seco is best known for its two 425-foot-tall cooling towers, part of the nuclear power plant that was shut down after concerns about safety and cost led to a voter referendum in 1989.

Today, the grassy park 25 miles southeast of Sacramento features a 160-acre lake, shaded picnic areas and solar showers. Paddle boat and kayak rentals are also available.

The event, which gets under way at 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, usually draws a couple thousand anglers and their families.

"It's very much an opportunity for everyone to enjoy and go fishing," Udris says.
