Mich. man guilty of poaching in Colo.

By The Denver Post

A Michigan man pleaded guilty in Denver federal court Friday to a felony violation of a federal poaching law.

Sandy Schondelmayer, 53, admitted in a plea agreement with federal prosecutors to unlawfully killing a black bear north of Craig in 2001 and transporting the bear to Michigan.

The plea agreement requires Schondelmayer to pay $15,000 in fines and restitution. His right to hunting privileges in Colorado and several other Western states are revoked for life. He also is required to surrender to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service several big-game mounts. Schondelmayer also admitted to illegally killing other animals in Wyoming and Colorado between 1997 and 2000.

Schondelmayer could still be sentenced to five years of imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine up to $250,000 when sentenced. His sentencing date has not been set.
