I haven't read all the post only yours Calicop. I have been shooting for a great while and at this point I buy what ever I can afford. I have also found out that no one GUN/RIFLE does all so if you like the mini 30 buy it. Like someone else posted in here ammo is going to be hard to find for hunting and hunting in California you are going to need copper bullets which throws another monkey wrench into the mix. If you really want a automatic you can check Browning,FN and now Winchester makes a auto. Good luck on your search.

I saw a new Remington 750 in 30-06 at the gunshop the other day. The price tag was $579. Top one of those with a $149 Nikon 3x9x40 from Walmart, order a 10 round magazine ($39) for it from Cabelas, and you got yourself a semi-auto for all your rapid firing needs and good for any north america biggame. The total price will still be cheaper than that mini-30.

Another thought........

If you want a semi-auto military weapon that you can take hunting, why not pick up a M1 Garand from CMP? You can get a service grade for $595.00..... 30-06, reasonable accuracy and reliable.
