Mini Shed - Blacktail

Found a shed while camping at McKerricker over the Thanksgiving Holidays , was walking the dog on a trail and watching my steps real close as I have a screwed up back and a earlier misstep put me into major spasms . At first sight I thought it was a small piece of wood , upon picking it up I see its a spike barely 2.5" , pure , dumb luck finding one that tiny !

Question , I know this years antlers have not been shed yet , is this last years or could it be from this year ? Could a spike since it usually it's first growth be off on its timing on shedding ?

i've come across a few spike sheds.. i'm guessing they shed the same time as all the rest..
from looking at the coloring in the picture, it looks like that shed is from past years.

I can't speak for blacktails, but if it were a whitetail, I'd have to say it's last year's shed. I've found some that weren't chewed at all, just bleached.

Nice one! Definitely from a previous year. I have one that size and it is one of my favorites, I drilled a hole at the base and put it on my key chain.

Here it is next to my biggest blacktail spike shed.

Great find.
From my experience the smaller bucks tend to shed their antlers later than the bigger bucks. It is most likely from last year or later.

Ditto what DeerSlam said. The smaller ones usally drop later, so most likely last years. Cool find !
