The wife and I took off New Years morning to try and kill some pigs. After reading the post from the Admiral and knowing that I was going to be in the Atascadero area for the new years weekend I felt it was the perfect opportunity to go hunt a WU ranch on the 41 near the Jack Ranch Cafe (James Deans Crash Site) and look for some pigs. We pulled into the ranch about an hour before light and about 5 minutes before shooting time started walking towards an area I knew the pigs traveled through because the ranch we were hunting is just a crossing area for the pigs heading from there feeding area to there bedding area. We were walking up a cow trail towards a saddle and little did we know the pigs were doing the same thing only in the opposite direction. About the time we were going to top out on the little hill pigs started squealing and running 20 yards in front of us. I think they caught sight of our head just before we could see them since they had a slight advantage on us. They were running every where. The wife picked out a pig that was running up the opposite hill and put some copper in the air, but got nothing. I followed with a couple shots of my own and also got nothing. This was the first time either one of us has ever missed a pig with a rifle and even though our freezers were full we were a little disappointed at the blown opportunity. I never imagined with a ranch that doesn't have a single bush or tree on it that the pigs would manage to spot us before we spotted them, but it happened.
