So went out for a day hunt on some private property. After about 3 hrs of hiking my friend jumped a hog that had been down in a dry creek bed that took off running towards me and my friends dad. Seeing as how this was my first chance at a shot at something my friends dad was waiting for me to take a shot before he unloaded. I pulled out my sticks to stabilize my gun, and discovered they had broken in the past couple of months since I last used them. By now the pig was out about 150 yds, so I tried to line up a standing shot and missed. Friends dad started shooting but by now the pig was running fast towards another dry creek, where he managed to make his escape. Went over to check to see if we hit him but no blood anywhere. Exciting though, first time throwing lead at anything other than a target. Hoping to get back out again soon, but work and class are winning the free time battle.

Getting an opportunity to shoot is almost as exciting as a successful hunt. I have been using shooting sticks for about 15 years and I started carrying them in my hand like a walking stick about 10 years ago. I use them to support my binocs when glassing and then they are ready if I need to shoot. I now feel like I need them just to hike but this might not work for you. I am the only one in our group that does this so even my friends did not like it but you might try it. I do not think I could have taken my buck last week if I did not already have my shooting sticks out.

That's a pretty good idea. I'll have to try it out. Congrats on the buck. I'm definitely looking forward to getting back out and finding something. It was pretty awesome just seeing something shootable

How exciting. I purchased a buffalo gun 12 years ago and I have been using shooting sticks ever since. I agree with John, I use them as my binoculars tri pod and a walking stick
Hunting is exciting, everyone misses a shot. Cherish the moments in the field. Always exciting hunting hogs, you never know what to expect from them. Good luck.

Fun!! The good news is, you know where a pig is. Give it two weeks, go back early (before light), super stealthy and find some high ground to glass the creek bottoms. Wait till he shows himself and then shoot him. If he doesn't show himself, look around like you did before, but look very carefully for pig sign. If you don't bump him, find that sign and next time set up early where you'll be able to see him. Good luck and keep us posted.

Also, wouldn't hurt to put out a couple of trail cameras - get their pattern and whack 'em!
