Finally the day has come for me to leave for Montana and elk country! Hopefully the weather and the elk will cooperate for a change. Libby has some pretty rough countryside for a flatlander and I doubt that it's leveled out any since the last time I was there. Bags are all packed and loaded, now if I can just make it through security at the airport without any hitches.....

Good luck, god bless, and come back with pictures of you and some fat elk in the snow. Oh yeah, don't forget the story.

S.D.,

Good luck on the Libby area. It can be straight up and down in some places! But that's where the big bulls are holdin' up, also. Don't let a little snow hold ya back, get right in there and dig 'em out.

Well, I made it back in one piece, more or less. I managed to not get mauled by any grizzlies or scratched by any mountain lions, didn't freeze to a tree or get kicked by a horse. I did manage to stay and hunt with some seldom seen friends and take in some gorgeous scenery. They walked my legs off during the day, but fed me well at night. After a 2 1/2 hr stalk on the 11th day of the hunt, we were able to close to within 100 yds and I got my first elk (3x3). We couldn't get the horses within 1 1/2 mi due to 2 feet of crusted snow, so we packed out the front quarters the first night and got back to the house and in bed by 4:30am. By 6:30am 4 of us went back in and packed out the rest to the horses and finally got it in by 8:00pm. I saw moose, goats, eagles, bobcat, deer and even a pine martin. Lots of lion tracks where I got the elk, but nothing touched the meat overnight. Even though it's lots of work, I'm ready for a return trip.
