I've been hitting the "Special Drawing Status' several times a day as well. I'm thinking we'll know by the middle of the month, (next week) but I still check constantly.
I was unsuccessful last year so that should give me an edge this year. How about you? Did you apply last year? I'm trying to figure out a pattern here.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, you do the same for me.
Yeah for some reason the middle of the month sound right to me also. I applied last year and didn't get drawn. When I drew the tag in 2001 it was on my 2nd year of applying. So I hope that same pattern works this time as well. Good luck.
In the past I've been turned down and then drawn the next year and twice I've drawn the first year. Last year I wasn't drawn, so I'm hoping that this will be my lucky year.
What part of the state do you hunt in? Guided or DIY?
My Dad is from Montana and we still have some relatives that live there. They help us out some but we don't really pay for a guide. We hunt in Region 3 south of Helena. How about you ?
FForF, I think your timing is a little off. March 15 was the deadline and mid-April is the drawing. For sheep, goats and moose it's May 1 with the results late June.
Jflem, I'm up around Libby. A friend of mine has lived up there for around 25 years and I hunt with him and his son. We do all of our hunting in the Kootenai National Forest and Cabinet Wilderness. All public land.
Me and a buddy put in for two A-General mule deer tags. I bought a 5 day, two person, non-guided hunt, 5000 acre hunt on the Judith River with Lyn & Janet Bowman last year at the CDA Orange Show fairgrounds dinner.
We put in for the license and yesterday I recieved two blue Montana 2007 Non-Resident Deer/Elk/Antelope Application cards, and the Montana hunting Regulation book with hunting districts in it.
We have never applied in Montana and I am not sure what this means.
Did we get drawn or are we still in the waiting/hoping mode? The area is in the 426 district.
I'm pretty sure that anyone that applies for the drawing gets the regulations. They must figure that once you've found out if you were successful in the draw, you've had time to look over the regulations and applications for Special Permits so that you know what to apply for before May 1. This does NOT mean you've successfully drawn the license. That should be made known soon.
Good luck to all that applied.
If you applied for the Outfitter-sponsored license, I think that means you're in.
Did you put in for just the general deer or the elk/deer combo?
They told me the combo has a higher chance to draw but cost an extra 2-3 hundred. We will not have the time to hunt elk so we only did the deer general.
also did you pay the extra for a bonus point or do you think it is worth it?
Dan,
Last year we put in for just deer and yes we bought a preference point. I then read in Eastmans that if you didn't put in for the combo your chances are very slim. So I called fish and game and the lady told me that with one preference point we have a 25% chance to draw with putting in for deer only and 86% chance if we put in for the combo. Lyn doesn't allow elk hunting so we are basically eating the extra cash to get drawn, sucks!
