el_vaquero,
Calero is off limits to hunting and they have round the clock security. Park Rangers by day, private patrol at night. I always kinda wondered why they spend tax payers money to have night security at a resivior, but I'm sure it's there for a good reason. I speculate it is to keep people from trying to fish or jet ski at night. Maybe from hunting around it too. If anybody knows for sure, please enlighten me!!
Jean,
These guys were closer to the spillway, after it actually, if your heading toward Almaden. Between the spillway and park entrance, about 50 yards in from the road. I have seen the Turkeys as well.
Jean, that is so cool to have spent time with your Mother like that. I myself love to spend time with my son doing exactly that, slow driving down country roads, just seeing what we can see.
Your story brought smile on this usually gloomy (June gloom) day and the first day of work week.
I myself, when I have time to kill, would drive around Calaveras road when I was still living up North. It is such a lovely country and I would imagine that driving your mom up those San Jose hills had brought her immense happiness. Not just for the awesome view but the chance of having a time with you.
I don't think my Mom ever hunted but she was always aware of and attuned to nature. She could find joy in discovering a patch of blue-eyed grass or wild grapes. This was part of her gift to me.
When we were growing up, she had a volunteer job at the local museum in the natural history section. She had a running exhibit of California native plants. We would go out every weekend so she could collect different plants and leroy the name cards with the common and scientific names.
One time we were hiking up a fire road in Limekiln Canyon at Lexington Reservoir and a truck comes down the road with a dead boar in the back. This was 40 years ago and all I remember thinking was "WOW!". This is one of the seeds of my fascination with these critters.
Thanks again guys, for your kind words and reminders of many good times.
