I want to start out by saying thanks to Chopper and his wife for the privilege of hunting on their fantastic privite property.
I want to personally thank Scottosan, Blloyd, Skeet, RD and their cousin Jeff for joining me on this Mothers Day weekend hunt. I could not of asked for a better group of guys to hunt with, they are all true archers and bowhunters who have a great passion for hunting!
this was my second hunt at Chopper's and my second time hunting wild pigs and it will be the most memorable. Thursday afternoon we did the the usual tour of the ranch which is very helpful for getting to know the layout of the property and hot spots which are everywere. then we did some warm up shooting got are game plans together and headed out for our first evening hunt. me and Scottosan headed to the Twin Oak's area (one of my favorite area's). Scottosan headed towards the Bowl area to hunt and i took the path to the Twin Oak tree's to work down the dozer cuts to the bottom. once I reached the dozer cuts I started glassing the opposite hillsides and bottoms for pigs, did not see anything so as soon as i lowerd my glasses low and behold 50 yards down the cut from me are two 250 hog's and a little football sized one crossing the path but they already went in to the brush so no chance for a shot but good sign already. I continued to the bottom and followed the creek bed and found some fresh mud wallows and mud rubs on the tree's, very good sign! I ended up in the Oak bottoms under a huge oak tree for cover with shooting lanes overlooking an open medow with a worn pig path 10 yards away going into a draw. so I post up and sit with 20 minutes of light left, well nothing happend and i had around 4 minutes off shooting light left and decided to wrap it up and head back, for some unknown STUPID
<
reason which I never do until i am always back to camp is take off my release and I went to put my headlamp on and out of nowwhere a group of about 12 pigs all sizes are crossing 30 feet in front of me in a trian line with all the big one's leading and the little one's following at the end, I freeked out and try put my release back on as the pigs are walking by and it was total mess, they herd the velcro strap as i was trying to put it on and started running off into the ravine, (TALK ABOUT GETTING CAUGHT WITH YOUR PANTS DOWN). I blew the best opper. I had the whole weekend on my first evening hunt! I dont know why I just didnt pick up my bow and shoot with my fingers, oh well hog fever! I could of had my pick of pigs as they were walking by at 30 feet as if i had my bow in my hand. NUMBER ONE rule of thumb (NEVER TAKE OFF YOUR RELEASE) i will sleep with mine on the next hunt! and rule No#2, those last 2 or 3 minutes of legal shooting light are the most important when pig hunting and every second counts, so use it all! but it was an exciteing first night for me seeing about 15 pigs
<
!
so I met up with Scottosan and he had a pig encounter too but did not connect due to a little radio blunder, but we had seen pigs our first night and the whole weekend looked promising and looked forward to the morning hunt. back at the cabin the boys were cooking some great food, we had some good pasta Jeff cooked and Scottosan's Jambalaya Spicey Pork and Shimp and I grilled My marinated injected chicken drumsticks, we had all kinds of other goodies to eat! called it a day and crashed for the 4 am wakeup.
day 2 was a great day of hunting but no luck in seeing piggie's for me, the boys had started scoreing pigs and things were getting exciting, and back at the cabin for the the night we had good stories to share on our day's hunt and make some new game plans for the next. we had more great food like Brut's venison burrito's and scott's marinated chunky pork slices, yum, yum!
that night Chopper had his good friend Mike who know's the ranch very well and a very successful pig hunter there and archer to join us and share his knowelage on the hot spots and how to hunt them, he was a great asset and was glad he joined us.
Saturday was another great morning of hunting but no piggie's for me, I saw some blacktails and a baby bobcat. I put a good stalk on a turkey
<
but he stayed out of range and headed into the brushy hillside so no luck on baggin a bird, so i decided to take a midday break and head back to the cabin for the eveing hunt. as I am driving on the trail I spot this nice grassy hillside with a bunch of tree stumps and ground squirrel's sitting on them so I pull over and decide to play (POP THE WEASEL) and put some blood on the arrow and record it with my new bowcam set up. so I pull out the bow and rangefinder turn on the bowcam and put the pin on a nice size one that popped out of a hole I hit the trigger and wham bam thank you mam I here that varmit give out his last cries and he is down for the count with a perfect broadside
<
shot! then Chopper and RD drive up with a hog in the truck that
<
RD shot as I am recovering my trophy bowkill, it was a big one! so I headed back to the cabin to share my bowkill with the guy's that i did record with my bowcam, its so cool to record your hunts and kills! so the aftrenoon hunt Scottosan puts an arrow in a bedded hog but no recovery an had to wait till nexy day to try agian. that afternoon I hunted POISON OAK HILL
<
it is a nice location but i had no luck, so that night we had more great food and stories to share and prepare for the morning hunt with the help of Mike and his expieriance of hunting the ranch.
well its 4:30 am Sunday morning the last hunt of the weekend and last chance to score a hog with a bow, that morning Chopper and Mike had a hot spot for me to hunt. so Chopper drives me there and gives me little directions and good luck and on on my way up the side of a ridge just before sun up. after only about 15 minutes I am near the top and have to cross a barb wire fence near a poison oak bush and as soon as i am over i look to my left and 100 yrds away in an open medow their are two 300+ size hogs tearing up on the hillside I didnt have much cover to work with but the grass was moist and soft and wind was good, I got to with in 60 yrds and then I here some noise behind me I turn slowly and their is a 300lb boar grazzing 40 yrds away from me so I turn the bowcam on raise my bow to draw with the sight light on the pins and go to draw but the angle made it hard and he turned and slowly moved on eating so I have 3 trophy hos grazzing along the poison oak brush all spread out to were I had to pay attention to all three to get to one of them, without alerting them it wasnt easy, so i put a slow stalk along the hillside following them so slowly as they moved on making sure i didn't step on one twig or it was over, this went for almost twenty minutes slowly stalking looking for an opportunity to get in range for a shot My adrenilen was flowing. then the hogs go through the only opening on the hillside of bare pine tree branchs that had crawling room only to get through so i was not giving up after all this hard work so I crawled on my hands and knee's through 50 ft. of low branchs and in the path one of the hogs left a hot fresh log of pig crap for me to touch and smell, how exciting but I was still on them with out getting busted, just no cover to work with between me and them they were very alert, so for almost another 15 minute's the stalk continues on the hillside. I finially get in front and above them for a last chance shot and seethem coming my way and as one gets to about 35 yard below me, I go to draw my bow and out of nowhere a whole group of hogs busted out the brush at the bottom of the hillside just below me and the three pigs i was stalking they all blew out of there and my stalk was over after all that hard work in tring to connect, I pull out the windicater and check and it flows striaght down hill from me thats why those hogs jetted the wind had shifted downward once I reached the end of the hillside, it really freeked me out when all those hogs popped out of nowhere what a surprize. so that was a total of another 20 hogs i got to see this weekend but no connection, it was one of my greatest stalks and I learned alot for my second pig hunt. I ended up metting Blloyd on the top of the ridge and we shared our morning hunt story as we walked back down the hill to the truck, its a sad feeling when you know its over, but I am not dissapointed at all. Chopper and Mike did put me right on those hogs within minutes that morning, so thanks for the solid hot spot!

Over all I had the most rewarding 4 days of wild boar hunting anyone could ask for 110%, I saw around 30 hogs the whole weekend and I had the chance to tag out with out with 600lbs of pork this past weekened but it didnt work out that way an that was my own fault
<
. I got to share this hunt with 6 other great archers and bowhunters who all got shots on hogs who either hit and scored, missed or hit and didn't recover or me who had shots but didnt get them off, so we all got some action this weekend. I want to personally thank SKEET, RD, JEFF, BOB and SCOTT and MIKE and CHOPPER for making this hunt possible for me this Mothers Day weekend by joining me for an exciting wild pig hunt at Choppers>(WILD HOG ADVENTURE'S), IT WAS THE BEST! I will be back their again, it is a special place hunt for one mind soul and body, successful or not its hunting! and I got plenty of it this past wekekend. well, I am probably the only guy

TRA,

Sounds like you had a great time. It's all about metally recording each hunting experience as valuable lessons all in order to perfect the next hunt, then the next one, then the next one and so on...

You'll get em next time brother!!

just got back and let me say everything I have heard about choppers was on the money Get there day one we all go our own ways mainly exploring finding some good sign find a vantage place to sit a spell. Well after a hour the wind changes so I move a little and get the wind back in my face, I see some cows and calfs think nothing about it look back up at the cows and go that there is a hog. Well with all the cows around it covered up my noise had the wind in my face and snuck up to 35 yards. Couldnt get closer as the cows were onto me but hey I can hit 35 all day long. Well here comes piggy feaver I missed so bad the pig went five yards and went back to feeding then I did it again. Well I was feeling pretty low after blowing one heck of a oppertunity especially since everything else worked out so textbook up intel the shooting part.

Next morning same spot wind screwed spot a oreo collered pig dead down wind of me so I put a charge on him he knows something isnt right about to get in the thick stuff so I rush off a shot and go right under him Well the last thing I wanted to do was let my dad know that I had missed again but heck maybe a little harrashing would get me out of my funk.

That night you guessed it same spot but wind was messed up again so I did a little more explooring find a nice old road and walk it since the wind was right get to the end and head back and I hear some tropping comming out of the brush and I'm thinking cows but I take a knee anyway. Well out pops a snout at 15 yards I'm gussing it was 200+ facing me well I'm at full draw telling myself no shot skeet no shot well about a second later another pops out broadside so I swing the bow over in one fluid motion I actually remember to pick a spot this time and shoot. At the shot I hear that old familar sound thud pig jumps off the cut bank hits the road and thats it. She drops in less distance than the shot
<
Well since there is no tracking for this one I knock another arrow and work to get another shot off which I did but went right under another pig around 100lbs or so.

Next morning my dad connects on a nice 100lb boar thats it for me I didnt see another pig since friday but boy did I have plenty of shooting some great company and one heck of a great time. We are allready talking about next year.

Pic 4 of 4. Congrats on the pigs. Looks like some good eating. By the way, has anyone mentioned that there is a lot poison oak at Chopper's? I'm itching just looking at these pics.

nice photo's! did you say POISON OAK Kentuck, anyone who's been to Chopper's know its everywhere! walking around and through Poison Oak hill and paying attention for hogs is challenging but it is a good area to hunt. I haven't started itching yet. but thats where the hog's like hanging out in that stuff, so what can you do, thats part of pig hunting............tra

No doubt TRA. I lost track of my hog in a huge patch of p.o. last June. Huge thanks to Chopper though. He was wading in and out of the stuff with Trixie trying to locate a blood trail. I circled it several times and never cut a trail. I think given the fact that I had all my arros minus the broadhead that I must have hit the shoulder bone. It is definately a great place to hunt. Look forward to getting back up there.
