I drove up in the Tehachapi mountains last night to scout a new area. I'm sure I saw mountain lion paw prints. They were too large to be anything else. Does anyone know for sure if they are around this area?

There's not many places that I've been without seeing prints....

The fact of the matter is, the only place in California I would be surprised to see a mountain lion is the Farallon Islands 20+ miles offshore from San Francisco. The rest of the state hosts thriving lion populations, and the Tehachapis are probably some of the better lion habitat out there. They are basically everywhere, just in varrying densities.

Still, these animals go to great lengths to avoid humans so consider yourself lucky if you ever see one. With all the time I spend in the outdoors I've seen one just once (near Mammoth); however, I'm now seeing tracks in the SF Peninsula parks (i.e., Windy Hill, Purisima, Big Basin) at least monthly.

I hunted Cummings Ranch, a WU property in Tehachapi, a few weeks ago. Lion tracks everywhere and very few deer and hogs. The caretaker told me that the government hunters had taken 3 lions from the property but there were still another 6 lions actively working the ranch. I hunted the south slope of Mt. Palomar in San Diego yesterday evening and saw many lion tracks, far more than in years past and very few deer tracks, far less than in years past. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on.

This year my wife and I saw the DFG tree a cat at the Tejon Ranch in the Tehachipi mountains in May. They tranquilized it and put a gps tracking collar on it. About a 60 lb. cat.
Also, in July we had two, yes two, mountain lions pass in front of us at no more than 50 yards while we were pig hunting at the ranch. May have been partners as the large one was a male. That was the closest we've ever been to a cat and I want to tell you it sure made us glad we had our rifles along. The male turned and slowly looked at us and than proceded crossing in front. Oh man, my heart started pumping.

I was working today in Squaw Valley doing the electrical on a cabin. Leaving town we saw a lion cross the road right in front of us. He wasn't in a hurry at all. For those of you who know where it is............he was about 200 feet past the pizza place in town.(bear Mt I think)

my favorite lodge is 20 miles up the Kern River (north of Kernville) and they were visited by a mountain lion just a few weeks ago. ML's have been in that area for years and years and years.

I drive down the 126 every day between Valencia and Oxnard...there are always downed animals on the side of the road first thing in the morning...last week I saw a downed lion just before Fillmore...I think its time we open a season on the cats and keep the population in check.

Just a thought

If there are deer in the area, do not be surprised to see a lion.
