Hey, I'm planning on mounting my hunting / wildlife photographs. I have the pictures printed out on glossy 8.5x11 paper and whats the best way to mount them up? I tried some frames from walmart, but it just doesnt give it an 'outdoorsy' feel. I'd like to mount them with minimal border area. I was thinking of pasting the pictures on a piece of wood thats a little wider and then applying a coat of lacquer on it to give it a polished/laminated feel. Anyone have any beginners guides or advice on this? Is this a good idea, do you guys have any other recommendations?

I always like the look and feel of a 2 toned matte. Choose colors that compliment your photo. I have done a few myself (bought the frame and matte from an art store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby)

I have had a few professionally done also.. they really look good, but you pay quite a bit more.

Here are a few of them in action

I purchased some basic wood frames at Pamida, and scuffed them up, then applied some darker varnish. Gave it more of a rustic feel.

I then put photos of each hunter and his buck and mounted underneath the actual buck/antler mount.

Looks great at our cabin (if I say so myself

I do framing all of the time for people and a double mat with a 1 to 2 inch border on an 8 x 10 will make your pictures stand out. Also....metal custom frames are much cheaper than quality wood frames. I purchase my frames from American Frame and they have an exstensive selection including a rustic weathered series in many colors that sounds like something you might like.

I made a frame for my bird dog. She retired a few years ago. I got a few boards from my neighbors privacy fence that he was tearing down. The pic is an 8x10 with an oval mat encircling her face and chest. I took a couple of tail feathers from her last pheasant she retrieved along with her bell and hung them from the corners. The wood on the frame looks like weathered barn wood. Really cool picture. I'd post a pic but have yet to buy a digital camera.

You would be much better off getting the picture printed professionally first. Pictures printed at home do not last as well as pictures done by developing real photographic paper.
