I got home a little later than ussual and the wife wanted to head up the canyon to do some visiting......we get about 1/2 mile from our place and I see a big black hog comming off the hill into the creek......I told the wife "there's mr. lucky".....(that's what one of the guys here at work called him and it sounds better than "the pig or the hog")....anyways,after we get back home I grabbed the camera and headed down to the creek to see if he came onto our property......sure enough there he is!!!! I take a quick snap shot and head back to the house for my bow (and my range finder)........when I get back he's still in the same spot...I range him at 56 yards.......no problem.......there's plenty of daylight left so I sit and wait for him to make his way towards me........not happening this time and he turns and starts moving the other direction.......I decide to put a stalk on him....I circle up and around and come back down to where I figure he'd be......not there.......a little ways down the creek I see something dark in the tulles....knowing that the only dark thing in tulles are hog's I put a sneek on him my mother would be proud of........as I stand readying myself for a shot I see a nice dark pool of water......
<
......I scan up and down the creek trying to figure out where he went when I see some tulles moving......I work my way around some brush and see his back sticking out of some grass......I range him at exactly 20 yards....mr. lucky's time has come...I stand and prepair to draw as soon as he get's into the open.........this takes less than a minute.......there he is......broadside....in the open......hmmmm....he's got boobies........it's mrs. lucky......I look around for the kids when she must have seen me or winded me...she let's out ther weirdest grunt I've ever heard and takes off...now I see the piglets comming out of the tules.......I still haven't figured out this camera but here's the quick pic I took.....I think I'll try "auto" next time and let the camera figure out it's own settings.....LOL.

Mr. or Mrs. Lucky......ha...what a great name, fits perfectly, just like Wilbur...LOL....

keep it up birddawg, unlike Speckmisser, we love to read of your close encounters. My money is on you by a nose...I mean snout!!!!

Speck, I suggest you call Deedy up and get something scheduled. If you do happen to be down that way...I hear there's some BLM creekbed just outside of Coalinga that has hogs...

He's definitely putting it to me, there Bighog...

I've got plans to visit with Deedy, but that ain't 'til October and I'll be toting the new howitzer instead of the bow. But I've heard a bit about those Coalinga creekbeds too... could be a road trip in the near future.

The thing that worries me the most is that BirdDawg remembered:

1. His rangefinder, camera & bow (all at the same time)

And:
2. He's seeing pigs almost everyday

This combo could have a serious effect on the outcome of your success rate with this bet...

I do have a archery hunt here for you... sooner than the rifle one in October...I think we'd better talk....

Deedy, it's a tough one... those hogs are, literally, right in his back yard. The fact that he hasn't stuck one yet speaks volumes about his dedication to winning this bet...

As far as getting down there before October, it's not looking good. I'm gone every weekend this month, then from Sept 13-22. Too bad you're too far down for me to pull it off in a day trip... but Coalinga is close enough to make a quick strike.

Speck~ you are a brave soul, "stirring the pot" with no pigs in your backyard. Nothing too easy about toasty Coalinga either...but I have great faith in you.

If I could find my popcorn icon I'd post that up too. This is getting good.

I'm looking forward to Mr. (or Ms. with no boobies) Lucky day #3, BirdDawg

BirdDawg- I do have a couple of your good buddies here with me. Paul & Jacob and I went out tonight (didn't forget anything- but didn't see anything either- maybe I should forget something!) That's OK, we'll hit the fields at first light tomorrow... I'm sure you'll hear something from us by the end of the weekend... we have a lot of fun with them. Great people. Karin and Jacob are on this full out squirrel competition, Karin's shooting her patterns pretty tight these days, just to beat Jacob on these squirrels. It's a crack up (Jacob beat her last time). So the "bet " thing is definately on here too.

As you know I decided to rob my "piggie" bank and expand the squirrel hunt in hopes of getting my son Jacob a real memorable hoghunt. The first weekend we saw numerous prospects. Jacob wanted a real big one, preferably one with some distinctive colorings. So in a true testament to customer satisfaction, Deedy would not allow Jacob to pull the trigger on just any ol' hog. She kept saying.."that ones too small", "that one's not special enough" and she was right on all accounts. To our dismay, at the end of the weekend, none of her special hogs cooperated. So Deedy, being the gracious host she is, offered to have us return at no charge, to try again another weekend of our choosing.

We returned to Deedy's this weekend. Stayed in her beautiful Cabin #7 and enjoyed her wonderful resort to the fullest. We took a cooling break and swam in Lake San Antonio just a few miles down the road. Karin and Jacob even got the chance to shoot a few more squirrels together. But alas, the hogs we had seen a few weeks prior had decided to go on a holiday themselves and were nowhere to be found. I had informed Deedy this would be Jacob's last chance this year to get a pig because Monday he started double day football practices and the season extends through October and then Basketball starts up. So no matter what, I really wanted him to get a pig this weekend.

Deedy called Mr. Tom Willoughby and we met him in San Ardo. That evening Jacob and Tom put a sneek on some hogs, but they winded them at the last moment and took off. Tom knew right where they were headed though and we raced to cut them off. Jacob got set up to shoot accross a small canyon and missed his first shot. Several feverish follow-up shots from myself and Jacob failed to slow the quickly moving herd....and we lost them. Jacob was dejected to say the least.

Tom said it was no problem as he had a couple water holes we could try, but we had to move fast as last light was fading on the horizon. At the second waterhole Jacob spotted a small belted colored pig moving up a hill. Tom got us into close range and Jacob and I jumped out. The idea was I would back him up. Jacob said "should I shoot" and I said "YES!!!".....nothing.... I waited another 2 seconds.... still nothing. The hog started to get behind a tree. Still no shot....so as the hogs head started to dissapear behing the tree....My thoughts were I did not want another hog to get away...so I fired and the hog went down. Jacob was mortified and with good reason. I tried to explain my actions, but nothing I said seemed to help the situation. I had just shot his pig, the pig he had hunted so long and hard for. Eventaully, he accepted my apologies and forgave me, but it was a somber evening in our #7 cabin that night.

Luckily, Tom agreed to take us out again in the morning. He was taking out another hunter from Canada who was visiting KnifeNut (Andre) from JHO. You may remember his post asking for guide advise on short notice. Turns out KnifeNut's buddy (Mike) was documenting his CA hoghunt for a hunting publication in Russia. Anyway, not 15 minutes into the hunt Jacob spots a lone hog making a hasty accent up a steep canyon. Tom hits the gas and we get to the top. The hog is fast and has already crossed over the ridge and is out of sight, well on his way down the other side of the mountain. Tom unleashes his two dogs and with a yelp, they are on the pigs trail. We catch up to them half way down the other side of the mountain and Tom gets Jacob set up for the shot. KABOOOM....the hogs hit high in the back, but this is no ordinary hog. It fights through the pain and two dogs. The chase is on again. Down the mountain, accross the flat and up into another canyon on the opposite side. Tom manuevars his truck up a hair raising incline and gets Jacob into shooting position again. KABOOOOM......the chase is over, the hog goes down. Remember I said this was no ordinary hog? Well I know he was fast and I know he was tough, but what I didn't know was he was doing all of this on only three legs. He was indeed a very special hog. Jacob was estatic and kept pointing out how his boar was much bigger than the little sow I had stolen from him. And what an awesome animal he must be to survive in this steep unforgiving country with only three legs. It was truly an awesome animal and a memorable hunt for both of us...

KnifeNut's friend Mike from Canada also harvested a nice sow and I am sure he will be telling the story and posting some pics for you. I just wanted to say a special thanks to Birddawg, Deedy, Karin, the staff at Bryson Resort and to Mr. Tom Willoughby for all their generosity and hard work. You have given my son and myself a memory that will last a lifetime.

Here is a pic of Jacob and Mike from Canada with their hogs. Two very happy hunters. You can see Jacobs pig is missing a front leg and the wound is totally heald over, no guess when it could have happened. The way he moved he didn't seem to need it much. He was truly an amazing hog. Sorry about the blood in the pic, but thats hunting for ya!!
