Bighog,

Congrats to you and your son. I know my first hunt with my son is a memory we'll never forget, and I'm sure yours is the same. I'm looking forward to my daughters first hunt and I'm still trying to decide what rifle/caliber to get her. I'm curious what your sion is shooting, from the pics it looks like there's a muzzlebrake installed. Any info on your boys gun would be appreciated. Thanks a lot and again, congrats.

Daddy63,
Your question opened a can of worms for me, but first some background.

My son started out shooting an old .243 at age 10 that belonged to a hunting buddy of mine. He took his first hog with it sitting on my knee because he was too short to see out of the stand. My buddy had actually cut the stock on it and wideled it down so both our son's could get their small hands around it. It looked like hell, but they were able to shoot it pretty well. My choice for a first gun for a youngster would be a .243

To start to answer your question though, I will give you the history as I know it. When my son was about 12 a buddy at work was working on a drug task force. Several of the guys on the squad were snipers from several jurisdictions and some of them liked to hunt. They convinced him to purchase the .308 rifle you see in the pic, so he could accompany them on some hunting trips. So the rifle started out as a police sniper rifle. Well, after he bought this sniper rifle with it's custom muzzle break the task force experienced personnel changes and the guys who were supposed to teach him to hunt dispersed. So he was stuck with a rifle he had no use for. He knew I hunted and offered to sell it to me for $700. It is a Remington, I think model 700 in stainless with a gold ring luepold 3x9. It came in a hard gun case and he threw in a case of ammo as well. I felt it would be a great low recoil hunting rifle for my son with enough impact power to take big game and was a good deal money wise, so we switched it over all legal like.

The rifle has served my son well over the last couple years. He is 14 now and has taken several deer, javelina's and a hog with it. The gun has never given me pause until this last weekend. Jacob always seemed to be a crack shot with it. I attributed this to the muzzle break taking all the recoil out of shooting it. After Jacob missed the first hog and hit really high at point blank range on the second, Tom Willoughby said he thought Jacob may be flinching from the sideways blast created by the muzzle break. I can vouch for that, you don't want to be anywhere but behind that gun when it goes off, because the blast comes out the sides and stays right there. It is very loud. You also don't want to use a car hood as a rest because the blast will shatter a windshield. So Jacob used Tom's rifle to finish off the hog. Then Tom said something that rang true and has given me a lot of thought since the weekend. He said "when your shooting at an animal you are not going to notice any recoil anyway". So bottom line is over the weekend my thoughts about this rifle for hunting purposes has done a 180 degree turn.

I hope this answers your question. Now, can I interest you in a used hunting rifle?.....LOL

Here is the best pic of it I could find. You can double click on it to sharpen it up slightly.

The hog's are everywhere here......I've been run down by 2 boars in the last day.......

actually:

I have 2 GSP's still in town and have been too busy building a kennel so I can bring them home to check the creek this week......I know, poor excuse, but it's all I have at the moment.

BirdDawg, Actually the whole story sounds all too familiar. Except for the part about being run over by just 2 boars- usually it's three here...

Bighog,

Thanks so much for the reply. I totally understand where you are coming from and your decision on buying the 308. It is experience like that that really helps my decision so thanks so much.

I've hunted with Tom quite a few times and he is really good at what he does. Congrats again to you and your son. Nothing beats the hunting trips with your kids does it?

Thanks again and take care.

Don't ya love it when the digging bar about breaks your wrist from the impact? I feel for you buddy. And if you ever get that PTO spiral digging thing for the back of your tractor- absolutely wait til March or April to use it. I heard it only works when the ground is soft & wet...

LOL.......wouldn't need it in the spring........real easy digging......actually this digger works good.......unfortunately the father in law loaned it out and the attatchment from the PTO to the digger is twisted.......from the looks of it the guy must have hit a rock or something and kept trying to dig through it........an easy fix with a torch and a new attatchment......unfortunately the only time I think about ordering the parts is when i need the dang thing....anyways I'm sure rancho or speck will be more than happy to come down and dig holes......LOL.....

Yepp... I was just mentioning the other day that I really had nothing to do with all my spare time, and I sure do wish I could find someone who needed some holes dug through solid rock and dense clay.

OK, I like to get an early start, so if you can be out there waiting for me around 0430, we'll get right to it.

If I'm late, go ahead and start without me. I'll be along directly.

well, I went down to the creek yesterday.....I checked the ussual spots hoping to see mr. lucky....
....or even mrs. lucky....not seeing anything or even any fresh sign I decided to cut across the property
to where I knew there was a big wallow....unfortunately this meant I had to crawl through brush
and cut through the cotton woods which meant my allergies will be flaring up big time........
while crawling through the brush I heard the distinctive grunt of a hog
laughing at me....it sounded close enough that I should be able to see something.....nothing....
I sat there motionless for 5 minutes all the while this hog was taunting me....(kind of like the english dude in
monty python and the holy grail).....figuring I only had 30 minutes of shooting time left I decided to
try and make it out of the brush into a clearing and maybe get a shot.....as soon as I made a move the grunting abruptly stopped...
busted......I made it into the clearing and scoped out the area........so quiet you could here a pin drop....
these dang hog's know when they are safe...on several occasions I've jumped hog's here and they take 2 steps into the brush and lay down
and wait....once in the brush it's darn near impossible to get them to move....now I'm ticked off...
I had the opertunity to shoot one of these hog's in the past and passed....I get so mad I throw my bow down in the creek
and hit the only rock for miles around busting one of the limbs clean in two......ARGH!!!! what to do now?
I kick the dang bow sending it into the brush spooking out the hog which stops staring at me
less than 15 yards away.......LOL.......just kidding......I'm not a golfer....I actually waited hoping the hog would come out and finally gave up
and headed over to where the wallow was......there's alot of sign but no hog's in sight...
nothing to do now but head back to the house and BBQ a steak or 2 and have a cold one..all in
all it was a pretty good evening.
