This year I'm only guiding one pig hunt per month. I guide groups of 4-6 hunters. So, if I'm always guiding, when do I get to hunt? The last time I personally hunted the property was in December 2013. I figured this year my own hunt would be in September 2014. In fact, my hunt was September 5th-7th--that's last weekend. This thread is the story of my own hunt (in this story I am a hunter, not acting as a guide!).

Looking back, in July 2014 I guided six hunters and we got six pigs. Last month in August 2014 I guided a group of four hunters but they only got one pig. During that August hunt I worried that perhaps, are there less pigs on the property these days? The property only has cattle fencing and pigs move freely to other ranches in the area. I heard a rumor the pigs are living it up in the neighboring pistachio orchards. That would make sense because the pistachios are ripe this time of year. It is almost time for pistachio harvest. There are a few thousand acres of pistachios nearby and pigs often run in that direction while we are hunting. If the pigs are in fact over there, they should be coming back in numbers after the pistachio harvest, and should be fattened up. :frown-2-grin:

Back to the story of my hunt. For this weekend, I am hunting with the guys who originally got me into hunting. I owe them a lot for exposing me to hunting in the first place. For the first hunt of the weekend, I was a "Blocker" sitting in a chair for almost two hours in 100 degree Madera heat, with no shade whatsoever (unlike the nice canopy chair pictured below). I was sitting on top of a hill. I started to actually melt into the chair while waiting for pigs, but none came, and no shot opportunities for me. I was wearing long sleeves and gloves, but it was so hot that at one point I thought I actually got sunburned through my shirt & vest. I didn't see any pigs that day, but one of the guys did get a pig, so at least I knew some were around.

The next day comes around, and I decide to split off on my own and use the morning as an opportunity to test my coyote call. I am looking to guide varmint hunts in the future so I need the practice. After splitting off from the group, I stop back at the headquarters to sneak a muffin break. I'm sitting there eating the muffin in my truck trying to figure out where to set up the coyote call when I hear gunshots in the distance. I go down to the canopy, not far from the ranch headquarters. I knew that if those gunshots were pushing pigs, I might get lucky. We hunt "The Ditch" aka the semi-dry creek bed. The pigs tend to stay along that creek which runs several miles through the ranch. Even if those gunshots were a mile away, the idea is that I might get lucky and pigs might come running past me.

I'm sitting there in the canopy for five minutes. By now my muffin has been long eaten. I hear some rustling. I ready my rifle, but no dice, when I look over its just some doves in the bushes. I wait a few more minutes. My mind starts to wander back to my coyote call. Where should I set up to call coyotes? Wait, what's that? This time I hear something big. It doesn't sound like doves this time, and its moving toward me. There's a clearing ahead, and let's just hope whatever is coming this way makes it into the clearing before it smells me. I raise my bolt action Remington 700. There's a 270 Winchester in the chamber. Whatever it is, I want to see it before it sees me. I click off the safety.

The next thing I know, a boar comes out into the clearing, trotting along. I stare at the boar. I'm still sitting in the chair. The boar is only a few feet into the clearing when he suddenly stops in his tracks. I raise the rifle scope to my eye. The boar is still there, stopped. He doesn't know what to make of the smell. Perhaps he smells human mixed with truck smell. He is there, in the clearing, standing still, trying to decide what to do. I know that it is just a matter of time until he decides to start running at full speed back into the thick brush, never to be seen again. Only a few seconds have passed since he emerged from the brush. Before the boar can make a decision, I line up the crosshairs and pull the trigger. I hit him right where I want. The boar falls to the ground, flailing its limbs for a few seconds, and then stops cold.

Here's the bullet wound.

I radio the guys and tell them I got a boar. I tell them I'm going to load it into my truck and take it back to the house. Twenty minutes later I'm still trying to load the boar. All I managed to do was roll him over. This boar is larger than I thought. There is no way I'm going to get the boar into the truck by myself.

I radio the guys that I've been here twenty minutes trying to lift this boar into the bed of my truck to no avail. I've barely gotten the boar off the ground, let alone into the truck. Now I start to think, no wonder people use hunting guides. I could sure use a few hunting guides here to help me haul this beast. Lol. I know I want to get this boar back to the headquarters in one piece (before gutting) so I can weigh him.

Looking forward to it! You're next in line! See you in October!

Thanks for the write-up and pics.

No problem. It ain't over yet, there are even more pics of this boar to come.

Thank! Uhm the muffins ran out for some reason. I think they were from Costco. Normally I'm on a cereal and protein shake diet with an occasional burrito. Some of the guys brought muffins but they ran out pretty fast due to me.

Here's the boar in the truck to give you some sense of his relative size.

This boar's tusks were just barely two inches!!

He weighed in at 230 LBS on the dot, before dressing & skinning.

Here's the boar after skinning. I accidentally cut one of the ligaments so he's only hanging from one leg.

Once he was all skinned, I took him down to Chase's Chop Shop in Madera so they could turn him into hams, breakfast sausage, etc. I will post some pics of the final product once I pick it up from the chop shop.

Hey Erik, that boar didn't happen to have an old Muzzy broadhead stuck in his right shoulder, did he? If so, I know a guy who might want it back, LOL.

You won't have to worry about this boar again any time soon.
