Just measured it at 16 1/4" long. Eyeguard is 2 1/4" long.
I dont think it is a typical young spike antler. In fact I am thinking it is the match to the 4 point we found earlier. This is why. We origionally went back to that area to find the other side of the 4 point shed. We picked up the spike within about 50 yards of where we found the 4 point. The eyeguards match perfectly and the color is the same also. We covered this area pretty good and did not come up with any other antlers.
When a buck gets wounded he can grow an oddball antler on the opposite of his body as the wound was on. This may be the case.
Now this is really cool. I had decided to head out and looked back down in a canyon at some deer. See if you can see it. It is laying right by the doe.
Great pics and sheds....Congrats!!
Those 2 antlers could be a matched set.In the pic with the tape measure the color and the size (thickness) match up perfect. With those 2 things going in your favor next I'd look at the pedicles.Normally they would match up very close in size and shape too.In the case of the big spike it does look like there was some damage to the pedicle and it's hard to see exactly what it looks like in the pic.My vote is leaning towards a matched set with what I see.
Thanks deershed. I posted the pics of the the spike on another forum. The vote came back unanimously in favor of a matched set. It is interesting though. The base of the spike does appear that it is damaged.
Yesterday was my best shed day yet. I am so glad I went as we got dumped on again with snow last night and this morning. Looks like my shed hunting will be suspended for a bit.
