Somebody tell me a mushroom story! I'm recovering
from a back surgery so I can't go. I had high hopes for
this year. Got some great places to go and was
going to use my new GPS to look and find more.

I talked to some locals here that were finding some
before the cold spell we just had. From the way they
talked they didn't find a big mess. One of them told
me about a friend who found about 100. Man I can't
wait to eat some
MrRee I've never tried the beef-steaks. I've always
been a afraid to.

I looked a little last Monday but no luck (which is typical for me) but last year I found a bunch of some real LATE, white morels and saved their location in my GPS. I was busting brush getting back to the car and would never find that spot without the GPS.

I also know a log where red ones usually grow but it's scheduled to be burned off by the conservation real soon if not already, wonder how much a burn hurts mushrooms? The red ones should be up by now

Sorry to hear about your back, hope you make a speedy recovery from it

All the books will tell you they are NOT safe to eat!
I grew up eating them as dad always picked them. To me, they are richer, most flavorful of all. Must be a difference in peoples systems??

Just save them for me
<
don't try them!

What do you mean by "red ones" the long stemed ones with the small cap? if so, we just call them caps here. I have found many places where people went through and just removed the cap and left the stem. I go behind them and take that stem. cooks up just as great as if you had it all.

Will be about 3 weeks befor they start any here in Michigan, but I am sure ready for a nice mess of them!!!

MrRee,

I was talking about the "Poison" ones mentioned above, we call them Red Ones around here, at least I guess we are talking about the same ones. They grow around old logs a lot and get pretty big

The best spot I've got is a clear cut that as been burnt
off. I found it accidentality while a buddy and I were riding
ATV's down a logging road through a clear cut. I was
looking in the brush and spotted one. I spot to pick it and
we found the Mother Load. The brush was so thick that
we had to get on are hands and knees. We both noticed
that there had been a fire there. We always go back to
it every year and their always there.
I find mosty the black ones in mid to late March, about
the time they start drying up I look for the white ones.
My wife got sick from some last year. Some people get
sick on the non poisonous ones. I'm glad I don't! I love
to hunt and eat them.
I may try to go later this week. The Doc told me to do
some walking, so there you go. I can look for mushrooms
while I'm walking!!!!!

Hey passthru, I get first dibs on all those poisen mushrooms!!!
<

SuperR Yes, those burned off areas are really great! An area where there has been a forest fire is one I look for in a heartbeat. Almost makes you want to do some arson just to get the mushrooms growing

<

Not really, but if you know of an area that has burned near you, that is one good hot spot!!

I used to walk miles to get to a spot, but my darn knees & age have caught up with me so I can't get them like I used to.

Hey Passthru, Lets make a deal
<

YOU get all the Amanitas (the "Destroying Angels") and I get all the Gyromitra (false Morel)
<

See how fair & what a nice guy I am!!!!

Forgot to ask, What book do you use Passthru?

I use "the Mushroom Handbook" by Louis C.C. Krieger of Ann Arbor Mi.

While he calls the Gyromitra "deadly Poisen" He admits his buddy & fellow expert on his research (Dr. Rudolf Ruedemann) of the New York State Museum has eaten them for 30 years!!!

Oh well, deal stands, you get the Amanitas, & I get the Gyromitras OK ?

I just got the April issue of the Missouri Conservationist
and there's a short but good article about morels. It's on
page 29. Check it out.

Howdy all. They've been picking the "reds" in Henry County. I saw some myself while shed hunting but they were pretty small. I can eat some without ill effect, but do know several people who REALLY get sick from eating them. Others eat them like potato chips without any problems.
