Here's our latest hog to come out of Vandenberg; a 202 lb. (gutted) boar. We had been hunting this dude for going on 2 months and finally everything came together last night.

We had parked the trucks and walked in to a point that allowed us to see where they had been coming out at night. Nothing for the last five nights. Steve looks back toward the trucks and spots this guy about 75 yards from the trucks! The wind was one of those you couldn't really trust--inconstant and slightly blowing toward him from us. We hotfooted it along the field edge until we got to 212 yards--as close as we were going to get. (He's out in an open field) It was Steve's shot, he and I got ready and the hog's head came up; he'd winded us. I kind of hissed: "Shoot him!" and his gun went off. Heard the "whop", but he didn't go down; just took off running into the field. I let fly and another "whop" and down he went. Got up on his front legs. We're frantically trying to reload our muzzleloaders, get it done and start in on him. Got to 100 yards and he got up and headed toward the brush on his front legs. I blasted him in the shoulder and down he went again, then got up again! Walked up on him and Steve hit him from 20 feet in the neck as he started to get up again and that was that. (That's four 250 gr. Barnes sabots with 110 gr. of Blackhorn 209)

Steve's first shot was a bit low, but got into the vitals (barely) and broke a front leg. My running shot hit him just forward of the pelvis breaking his spine. My next shot stirred everything up in the chest, broke both shoulders but left him still fighting, and Steve's coup de grace did the job. This was a particularly satisfying hunt 'cause we had been working him for so long and seen him half a dozen times with his spoor in there on our tracks every night. Finally! Good job Steve; great hunt!

That's a whopper! Great teeth!

Now that you've been hunting him for two months... what're you gonna do next?

To quote my hunting partner: "Go Hunting!"

For me: sleep in!

Hatchet: Normally I have no complaints with the Barnes, but this was a long poke, and if we were gonna get him the time was then or never. It was an exciting couple of minutes, let me tell you.
