My 03 CO Elk

I know the picture is bad, I forgot the camera. Anyway, it was a DIY hunt on public land near Cortez with an OTC tag in hot dry weather. The second general season. The elk were not coming out in the open during daylight hours, so I had to resort to sneaking through the timber with the wind in my face. It was a 20 yard shot. He may not be big, but I am very happy with him, and he eats great.

Dawg congrats, but I think you need to work on your huntin tales,

you didn't blow those other stalks, you passed up a lot of other elk before finding one up to your standards,

congrats, a do it yourself bull is always the biggest hoss in the woods.......

Hey Nice Bull. I have relatives that live in Cortez, and we do quite a bit of Hunting in that neck of the woods. My father just bought the last 500 Acres of the old family farm just up the highway a bit about 1 mile across the state line in Utah. I have taken a few nice Mulies in that area.

The locals were telling me stories about the Magnificient 7. They said there were 7 Huge definite Trophy class bucks that roamed around Mesa Verde where nobody can hunt. I was in Colorado at that time, and went out with a group of hunters for Buck and Bulls. I didn't have a tag, so I didn't carry a gun and just tried to be a pusher for the group, but one of the guys shot a huge 5 X 6 Mulie in an area called Sagehen that is just west of the Mcfee resevoir.

When dad took me out to the old farm, just across the state line from Dove Creek, we saw a group of Elk about a mile from the land we just bought. There were about 10 to 12 Cows, and 2 Bulls. One of the Bulls was a 1 X 2, and the other had 5 Points on his left side, but his right side was snapped off about 10 or 12 inches from the base, before any tines. Must have been a mean fight or wierd accident.

I also saw a Cow(elk) and a minivan that ran into eachother, and it wasn't a pretty sight for either.

Anyway, cool. What area were you hunting?

Hi Ratthevol, Lets just say north of McPhee Reservoir, so it was not too far from where you were. Sounds like you had a good trip. I saw one pretty good buck too, but did not have a deer tag either. If it were like the good old days.... Anyways, it says you are from the High Desert. I live in Ridgecrest.
