Yep, I've been to the museum. I actually went to school with the owners kid.
Lets see the story....I had hunted my butt off from the 15th to the 21st. Passed on a couple bigger bulls than the one I ended up with. I figured I had killed my share of cows and rag horns in the past so this year I had hoped to put a monster in the rafters with my midgets of the past.
On the 21st of oct we kinda decided that the elk had moved into the canyons in our area(38) and put down some roots. So my youngest brother(13) My uncle and myseslf. Decided to go put in some work. We headed to and area above a certain canyon. There is a minor walk up a gradual hill about a half mile long, then a staedy timber hunt until you get to some rimrocks that overlook the before mentioned canyon. We followed an old logging road to its end at the crest of the hill. then started hunting the timber toward the rimrocks for some glassing action. I wasn't expecting to see dick until I got a nose full of bull elk. If you have ever smelled elk before you know what I am talking about. It puts you into a zone. We fanned out and headed into the wind I spotted a calf bedded with about a hundred long brown legs milling around behind it. I took a knee and everyone else did the same.
While I was trying to get a clear shot a a bull that was with the heard my brother decided it was time to put a round into his .270....I was more than a little angry when the elk decided to take the same opportunity to run for the canyon.
MY uncle decided to make his way further down the slope to a vantage point that he thought would give him a better veiw of the animals. I gave my lil brother a motivational speach, then we headed into the wind toward the cow calls and choked off bugles that were less than a few hundred yards away in the timber.
MY little brother made me very proud with his feild craft. I was very impressed with how quiet he walked and how he limited his movements in the timber. ONce again I spotted some elk this time there were two bulls outside the herd, a spike, and my 5x5. I laid down and motioned for my brother to do the same. I pointed the elk out to him and he told me he needed to load his gun..........I was furious.
I told him that I was going to shoot the 5x5 then he could shoot the spike. to think I was going to let him take the bigger bull. I waited till the bull cleared a dead fall that was obstucting my shot, then I put a 160gr barnes x throgh his heart and lungs, adn out his opposite shoulder. MY brother was following the sipke through the timber as it ran strait at us. It then stopped behind some trees turned and ran. He didn't shoot! I was as happy with him for waiting for a responsible shot as I would have been had he dropped it. My bull expired about 10 ft. from where he had been shot. Barnes x does make a pretty dang good bullet, but I guess at 50 yards I could have killed him with a .243.
MY brother didn't have his gun loaded because its built off an old Mauser action with the orriginal safety, so the safety doesn't clear the scope. I took it to a gun smith and bought an aftermarket safety, then loaned him one of my rifles till it was done.
