It was a tough hunt. My partner shot a bull that scored 355- 5 mins into opening morning, mine wasnt as easy. We stalked this heard of about 200 elk for 4 days, with several bigger bulls. We would crawl thru the sage for about 200-300 yrds and everytime we would get close the wind would change and we would get busted. Last day of the hunt we woke up and it was snowing. The elk were up in the Junipers so we hopped from tree to tree until we got with-in about 300yrds. 2 shots from the 300RUM put him down quick. Being the last day I was more than happy to take the shot. For my first Elk I am more than happy with him. He taste good too!
We were down in Unit 82. Lots of elk down there. I didn't measure him, but I figured he was a little below 300.
I was shooting 180 grains, hand loaded with new Barnes Triple Shock X Bullets. The did a number on him at 300yrds, I was really impressed with their performance. First shot was right on, but he didnt go down. He started to walk to some private property and I didnt want to take any chances so I let a second one rip. I was a little far back, but it put him down. I am sure the first one would have been enough, but I got a bit anxious with him being my first Elk.
ESSposseI like your idea. You should be able to smell it when its cooking, I am right off Weir canyon. If you happen to show up I will definetly fill your fork with Elk meat.
Well done. It looks like two entry wounds, one above (and slightly behind) the shoulder and another in the ribcage further back. Can you give us an idea of the damage done and which shot was first? Not familiar with the 300 RUM, but it sounds like a thumper.
First shot was a bit high, but did its damage. Ripped the lungs apart and turned them into Lung soup.
Second shot wasnt need, but I got nervous when he got up and it was a little far back on his lungs.
I was using new Barnes triple X bullets, which did their job. Both bullets exited him at 300 yrs. But it was evident they expaneded nicely. The 300RUM is not the funnest gun to shoot, but I was fairly confident in its ability if I needed to take a longer shot.
