Just recently returned from a hunt on the Big Island with Doc Cherry.
It was great time. I harvested a nice Moulfon ram @8600 ft Elevation. Can't wait to back again. Wanna hunt some hogs in Laupahoehoe but this time withmy bow. Couple pic's below. I think lanai would make a nice trip in the near future. Let see how affordable this will be.

Nice Moulfon! Mouna Kea is a hard hunt but beautiful area. Did you spot from the truck or did you hike up the hill. I hiked up the hill once and shot one. Almost died on the way back to the truck. distance is deceving up there. I'm glad you had a good time with Doc. I have never had the chance to meet him. Seems like a great guy. I am going back home to Kona in late Aug. Let me know if you are going in the area.:smiley_green_with_e

awesome sheep!

I didnt realize there were mouflons on the big island. The DLNR regulation book just notes the big island having feral sheep, pigs and goats. Did you harvest it on public land? Is it open season on mouflons there or do they fall under the same rules as regular sheep?

Thanks for clearing that up Hawaiian style, and I thought I would have to travel to Lanai for a mouflon.

If you're after a pure mouflon than I wouldn't look on Mauna Kea. huntrpat got real lucky and that's not the norm. I would hunt for mouflon on the east slope of Mauna Loa just west of the Kau desert and Volcano NP. Go up Ainapo trail, access is through private property so you have to call the evening before to get the combination for the locked gate. The phone # is on the gate. I spent only a day there and didn't see any sheep, however, my friend saw some but couldn't get a shot off. I saw lots of trails and fresh sign and my wife found this dead ram.
Also, the Park Service conducts eradication hunts within the park, but you have to shoot whatever and can't trophy hunt.
Last year, Lanai had ewe only hunts on the lottery hunts. I don't know for how many years they're going to continue that.

We did the spot and stalk method. We saw a couple hunters head out before us. One thing I notice is alot of guys drive up the hill way to early in the dark and you can't see anything. We drove slow and got out and glass often. A good pair of binos is a must. I dont have the most exspensive pair anymore since someone like it more then I, and stole a pair of Zeis 10X56 out of my truck. So I use a pair of 10X42 Alpens which does the job. Most time I travel with spotting scope also by alpens 20x60x80. But since the Airline charges more to travel with gear I'm forced to travel lite.

Nice hybrid sheep, I really like the European mount that you did. How long were the horns?

I measure it once but knew it wasn't a record but a nice trophy for me being my 1st Mouflon. We spotted this ram from the bottom and drove to about 700 yds to verify what it was. Then we hike like the remainder 700 and found that they only moved about 200 yds from where we last saw them.

His hide was beautiful and wanted to do a full mount but the timing wrong and decide on Euro. But theirs always next time.
