Well it took me five years to get my rifle buck tag. I went out on Saturday (opening morning) and spotted a buck from about a mile away. We got out and started the stalk. Right before we got to were I last saw him, a doe stood up 100 yards away. my sister was with me and she had a doe tag. She came down from college to hunt, and only had that one day to do so. I told her I had all week to hunt and she needed to go ahead and shoot it. After she shot it and it went down, i went alone to the trees that the buck went in(only 10 trees in a Milo field). i got up to the trees and deer exploded everywhere. i had a spike come up at my feet. and the buck that i saw jumped up 150 yards away in the Milo and ran quartering away. i knew right away that it was a buck that i wanted but i didn’t shoot cause it wasn’t a great shot and we already had one deer down.

After we took my sisters doe home and took care of it i went back out with my dad. we went to a different spot to let that buck settle. i found my first arrowhead, and about 5 minutes later we had a 10 point whitetail come within 50 yards of us ,i passed because i was looking for something bigger cause he wasn’t very wide. He also had a small 4 by 4 mulley with him, and we got to hear them fighting in the trees before he came to us. neat to see a mullie and whitetail together and fighting. but i passed on both of them and after they left i found an old mullie shed. it was broke but had an awesome triple point, and would have been very big if it wasn’t broken.

Now the good part.
We went out on Saturday to a bunch of our good spots and saw nothing. so we went back to were i saw the big buck the day before. it took us 3 hours to sneak up on the trees in the middle of the Milo field. When i was about 300 yards away i say a deer stand up and walk in the trees feeding. when it finally lifted its head i knew it was the buck i saw the day before. i made it to the trees and didn’t see anything because they were 3 foot deep with tumble weeds. i had my dad scrape on a tree to sound like a deer and nothing happened. my dad walked about 20 yards along the tree row and we were gonna walk the tumble weeds and see if he stood up. my dad stopped instantly and looked down. he motioned to me and i did not understand his signals. but all the sudden the buck came up at his feet (15 feet to be exact) and took off running broadside to me. he was probably 40 yards away when i shot. it sounded good. and i saw him go down within 80 yards. Later my dad told me that he looked down and all he could see was antlers at his feet.

i am extremely happy with my first buck.
it is my last rifle buck however because i am switching to archery next year.

he is 26 inches at the widest outside spread.
5 by 4 he only has one brow tine
the darkest rack i have ever seen in my area.
my friend got one that day and his looked white compared to my chocolate brown horns
i really dig the color cause that is not common arround here

he weighed 210 after he was gutted so i would say he was at least 250
it took my dad and i all we had to get him out of the field

the rut is starting, did u notice how puffed out his neck is!
it was a blast!

i agree fossilman

no taz if i arrowed him i would for sure but since i used a rifle it just aint quite the same. i will do a european mount on him though since i have got a litle practice with the dead bucks that i have found last shed season.
i am starting to like the european mounts considering a few years ago i hated them.
juts a litle worried to do it on my own buck, i dont want to mess up or discolor the bottom of the antlers.
but my last one turned out great

Horns & Antlers, congrats on your first buck! a great payoff after 5 yrs, i truely beleive that BOWHUNTING is the ULTIMATE style of hunting! the last time i shot a deer with a gun was 13 years ago and i dont miss it at all, once you take your first big game animal with a bow you will understand. very good story and photos, and i look forward to reading your successful bowkill story in the future!
