[attachment=55059:12yr_old_bull2.jpg]Check this bull out another hunter in there camp shot it has some history behind him 12years old only 5 teeth left last year locals say he was a 396 class bull and this year 363 but the incredible thing is he had 14" bases
Those are some very impressive bulls!!! One thing that Utah does have is some super bowls...I mean bulls in bowls....err...ya know what I mean. If only I could draw a tag...
I've never shot one, but some of the better bulls in the wild I've run into, while deer hunting, were in Utah. We were in the southeastern part, south of Moab........
Sorry guys for taking so long to get on here. I had troubles because I changed my email.
I shot this bull on the evening of Sept 15. The hunt did not start off that great at all. My brother went up with me and we got there Thursday late morning before the hunt. I decided to shoot my rifle that I had already put 3 boxes through the month before to make sure that it was still on during our travels. First shot and the shell would not eject. Had to drive 10 miles back to town to get a ram rod to eject it. ( Figured it was just a bad shell.) Went back to shoot again and still had the problem. Decided to mess with it later and go do some scouting. This would be my first chance to scout the area for bulls. I took my rhino off the trailer to have problems with that not wanting to stay running. Had to do with altitude and bad gas. Was able to run it for the time being. We did not see a single elk that day. Headed back to town a little early so I could get something to clean out the inside of my barrel. Everything closes at 6pm and we made it to the hardware store at 6:05pm. Luckily they did not lock the door correctly and my brother was able to get in. While he was in the store, I stepped out of my truck to hear a hissing noise. Followed it to find that a valve stem on my truck was leaking. Even though everything was closed, a tow truck driver was bringing in a broken down rig and said he would stay late to fix for me. Took care of that problem. While he was doing so, I ripped the carb out of the rhino to clean that up. After also adding some octane boost and carb cleaner to the gas tank, that problem was solved. Even got some info for elk from him. He would not tell me where to go, but agreed on some of the places that I told him I was going to look. Now to the rifle, the most improtant tool. Never did get it fixed, but one of the locals in town that I knew let me barrow his. Also a 7mm Rem Mag.
Friady morning we are up early to go scouting. Saw some cows off in the distance but still no bulls. I was beginning to get discouraged, thinking maybe I should shoot the first thing I saw. Friday evening we finally heard a bugle. We ended up following it to make sure that it was an elk and not someone else. Got within 75yrds and could see the silhouette of a 5x5 with a couple cows. That got my hopes up. Only downfall was the fact that it was almost a full moon.
Opening morning we parked the rhino two miles from the truck then hiked in another1.5-2 miles chasing bugles. This was my first Bull Elk hunt and let me tell you, to have elk bugling within 50yrds from you in every direction is amazing. We must have been on 5 or 6 bulls. We even had a real nice one terrorize an aspen tree. I chose not to shoot any of these, just got some video. I thought I was going to regret this. After hiking all morning, we decided to head back to the truck after the bugling stopped. That is when we watched the other bull that is in the pictures get taken. We just met these people and I feel like we made life long friends. The guy was lucky enough to shoot this thing 75yrds from the main dirt road. We watched the entire thing play out. I was able to see the bullet hit and the bull run before I heard the shot. Later found out that Outfitters have been chasing this bull for 3 yrs and across 3 different units over 100 miles. We took some pictures and met the rest of their group then went on our way. Later that evening we pulled off the main dirt road and got out the spotting scopes. Just before dark we heard a bugle about 500yrds from the truck. Ran to the bugle to find my bull. I did not get a shot because I thought he was hurding his cows across the meadow to another thicket but he actually wallowed in a water hole that I did not know was there and then turnd right back around. I thought I blew my oppertunity.
Stayed lower Sunday morning hoping to see the bull again but did not. Saw some nice ones up high where we were the morning before. Got up there as quickly as possible but the one that we saw in the spotting scope was gone. We did see 5 other 5x5's and a 4x4 with about 30 cows. Forgot the video that time. Did not see anything else that day.
Monday morning we went high again. I am talking 10,800'+. Saw one really nice 6x5, but talked myself out of shooting. After that, we called in a 5x5 to within 30yrds, then another maybe 15' away. Made for some good pictures and video. Hiked back down the mountain empty handed. We met up with the guys that shot the bull opening morning and they showed me my bull on their trail-cam. That evening we set up at that water hole and waited. I had a 5x5 and a spike come out so I started calling to them to see how close I could get them to come. That is when mine came out. I did not even know he was there, my brother kept whispering to me. He turned broadside to me at 180yrds. Took out both lungs and pierced the heart. He ran maybe 30yrds and I put another one in him just in case. That was all she wrote.
Sorry for such a long story. It was one of my greatest experiences. I am still on cloud nine. One of the best things about it is that it only took me 4 yrs to get this tag. I wasn't even drawn. The day that I was supposed to bring my wife and newborn home from the hospital, I got a phone call saying that someone forfitted thier tag and my name was next on the list. Everyone that I met on the mountain said it took from 12-25yrs to get drawn. I guess I have someone watching over me.
Mike nice to see you finally made it on congrats you deserve that bull man hopefully you'll be able to top it one day! Then again that's gonna be pretty tuff!
Thanks again Frank. I am going to have to lower my standards. I was spoiled on my first elk hunt. Size does not matter too much now, I just want to hunt in the rut.
Congrats. Very nice bulls!!! Great story also. Hey wingbone2003, I grew up in La Mirada, maybe we know each other. Graduated class of 83. Living down south in HB now, but still have allot of friends in La Mirada.
Hey is that rack here in Utah at a local taxidermist? I think I have seen it in person. If not it is just like it. It has a funny tip on the sword point that is polished off real well.
