First and foremost, I was not successful. I got up there late Thursday night. Scouted out of Pine Springs campground Friday morning. Friday evening hike a few miles in from Yellowjacket. Spotted lots and lots of fresh sign and 1 doe. I decided I wasn't far enough in from the parking area so Sat morning I decided to hike in 1 mile, then head a different direction hoping to get away from the crowds. Didn't happen. Saw at leaset 15 flashlights before sunrise and 8-10 guys after light came. At least one of them used his binocs instead of his rifle scope to check me out. At least 30 gunshots in a 3 mile radius from the trail. 1 group of 20-30 mexicans in Pine Springs managed to get a 3x2 Sat afternoon.

Sunday morning we decided forget the trails and hike cross country from grade valley. More sign, does, and only 2 hunters seen. Nothing in the morning so we went back to camp for lunch and a nap. Drove around grade valley road a bit to see exactly how many people were out there. Got back to camp early afternoon and had to stop at the campsite of 20-30 mexicans (yep, in 1 campsite lol) cause they had a vehicle blocking the road. Watched 6 of them get out of an extended cab pickup. 4 grab their bush beater sticks out of the back and 2 grab another buck. Small forkie. Yes, I really watched them grab their bush beater sticks. No joke. 6-8 of them brought another small forkie back to camp before we left for our evening hunt on Sun. Great for them. I figure after the 30 of them split the meat since they all had a part in it they'll prolly get 10lbs each. If that...

Oh, I forgot about the navy blue late 80's or early 90's model single cab toyota with a camper shell driving Grade Valley rd near Fishbowls trailhead with a teenage mexican sitting on the tailgate firing his gun into the hills every 100 feet. Awesome...

The story only gets worse so I'll leave it at this.

I stayed until last night (Wed) and gave up. I never quit anything, especially when I'm trying something for the first time. I considered moving campgrounds to a different area, but just called it. We packed up in the dark. My brother and I worked hard. We layed down 30+ miles of leather on our trip. Saw lots of sign, 6-8 does, fresh bear scat (I coulda squeezed the moisture out of it), blah blah.

DFG was out their all weekend. They stopped and checked me Sat morning outta yellowjacket. Of course I was all legal, no bullet in the chamber, tag filled out, with lead ammo. Rumor around Pine Springs was they confiscated a 3x3 from yellowjacket Sat morning after checking me cause it wasn't tagged. :D.

Oh yeah, hiking back from Fishbowls 5 miles in the dark with a cat rawr 200 feet from the trail with 2 miles left to the truck sucked. The only time I was scared. And maybe when I saw the fresh bear scat near Cedar Creek with no tag.

At least we didn't get shot at. We wore our orange. Nobody scoped us with their rifles to my knowledge. So that's a plus.

It was an experience. All the crap aside, we still had fun. If anyone camped at Pine Springs I was in the white GMC Sonoma Ext Cab that played guitar good but couldn't sing worth crap lol. We saw alot of backcountry. Hiked to Fishbowls and Cedar Creek campgrounds. That was cool cause backbacking is something I've been wanting to get into for a few years now. I'll make my Badlands 2200 work for a couple weekenders at Cottonwood Lakes in the GTW and see how I really like it next summer. If I truly like it I'll get a bigger pack :D.

How do you know they were "mexicans" and not salvadorians, guatemalans,...etc?

Next year, I should go on the opener and stand along the road dressed like a clown while I sell tamales and champurrado from the back of my truck. I bet I could make some $. I could play some circus music on the CD player while I look for customers.:bag-on-head:

Call em whatever makes you feel better inside. We've all experienced them whether it's on a hunt, at the gas station stuck in line behind a farm bus full of em, lined up at the payphones, etc...

Now I'm not being racist cause next to my camp on opening weekend were ethnicities from Brazil, Mexica, and Puerto Rico. They were friendly, invited us over, kept their music down, and even told me to let them know if they got too loud. To me they were model Americans.

Either way, 30 "latinos" doing deer drives is not an ethical hunt, nor a reason to blast their "latino" music until 11pm partying and yelling "arrrriba" wearing their sombreros, and definitely not a success to be proud of.

Same with the teenage "latino" shooting from the tailgate of a truck driving down the road. I didn't see any Americans doing this...

I'm also sure there were idiot Americans taking shots they shouldn't of, being loud walking mountains and canyons oblivious to stealth hunters in the area.

Sounds like your just mad because the 20-30 "latinos" with their "brush beaters sticks" got bucks and you didn't even after walking "30+ miles". :bag-on-head:

Yes am upset at that lol. I could've gotten 20 of my friends/family and given 2-3 of them guns and the rest sticks so 3-4 of us could all shoot at the same running buck, no matter the shot placement. But I have morals and believe in ethical hunting...

What upset me the most was the teenage kid riding on the tailgate shooting a highpowered rifle from the waist into the hills beside the road. I was out of my truck parked at a trailhead when they drove by me doing that. How would you feel in my shoes?

I would have confronted the guy. Or at least yelled "hey, what are you doing? Your gonna kill someone." Did you report them to the LE? It is illegal to shoot from the road and also from a vehicle.

How would I feel? I WOULD NOT hunt the area you were in. 15 flashlights early in the morning is enough for me to get out of there and go to a less populated area. Im sure you wont hunt that same area next year, will you? I hate running into other hunters so much that I found many ways to avoid them, becoming a bow hunter is one of them. No worries about being confused for a deer/bear by some dumb/blind hunter.

You can complain as much as you want about d13/d11 openers or any other zone, but my conclusion is that those zones will ALWAYS be packed on the opener. Your best bet would be to hunt during weekdays and stay as far as you can from roads and trails. Just my :two cents:

you guys should see opening day in the state of PA , last time i was there (1996) we had 1.5 million+ guys in the woods opening day. 5th largest army in the world if they all banned together. Orange required on head, back and chest.

Deer drives were the norm after the first 3 hours of shooting light, I would say 70% of deer killed are still killed in a drive, CA deer hunting is a lot more challenging

Your right Cutthroat. I will never hunt the opener again unless I'm in a backpacking camp at least 5 miles in or an X zone or late hunt.

Like I said, everything aside my bro and I still had fun. It was a learning experience for my first time deer hunting. I'm still confident I'll get one by the end of the season.

WoW, what a story.
Not to thread jack, but honestly, I’ve never seen Hispanic hunters hunt like that. But I have witness other doing so. Is this something new?
I have more than 2 stories, here's 2 short ones.
I witness (true stories) 3 Nazis driving deer during whilst I was on a hunting expedition at Cache Creek, Lake County. They happen to be from Nevada, and had been driving deer up by the spillway/dam for their California friends. They told me that they fell into the creek, and washed down the creek for nearly a ¼.
Yeap, 3 Nazis, swastikas tattoos and all. This all happened during a high water release event from Clear Lake. The temperature was in the 100’s that day, I was on the west side of the creek, they on the east, and they needed drinking water bad. The 3 of them had no weapons, no shirts, and they looked battered to hell. I directed them towards a zip line that was in the area so that they could cross the creek safely. The water was at flood stage. After they crossed I gave them an open gallon of water and pointed them to parking area. I made sure that they didn't get close to me, no matter, because I was armed to the teeth.
On another occasion I witness 2 Marines driving up and down desert washes shooting jackrabbits from a lifted 4x4, I was prospecting for gold at the time.
I have several rude fishing stories too.

It sounds to me like your deer hunt preparation wasn't much different from the people you are complaining about. Had you done your pre-season homework a little better, you would have known that the area you were hunting was probably a madhouse in years past. Overcrowded areas don't become overcrowded overnight. I'm sure your hunting adversaries have been hunting that spot for generations. Sorry if I come accross like a know at all d!ck; but in order to catch the prey, you have to be smarter than the predators. I'm not excusing the other hunters actions, but take heed. This problem is not going to change. People are what they're taught. These yahoos are only teaching their next generation the same bad habits.

True farmer (I think this was his first year), but - I've NEVER seen some guy sitting in the back of a truck random firing into the areas off the shoulder of the road while driving down it, whats up with that? Reckless and nonsensical, who would even consider such a thing = selfish criminal morons!
