I shot this Elk on Sat. September 20th around 7:15 pm. I knew I hit him way back so I left him over night. I went back to track him and found very little blood. I searched for 8 hours and nothing. I own 5 German Shorthair pointers, so I went home and got my Bitch and Stud and a pup I kept from her last litter. we searched for about an hour and to my amazement the pup 6 mos old found my Elk. So on to blacktail season in November, I also got my bear this year, about 1000 yards from where I shot my elk.

Wow, nice job! I'm not trying to be a shot placement policeman, just genuinely curious. How did the shot get so far back, was he moving? What distance?

He went about 250 yards, I took a 40 yard shot. I tried a new pair of very thin leather gloves, which caused my bow to cant right when I drew back. He ended up piling up in some very thick 7 yr old pine growth. If it wasnt for my dogs I would have never found him. I was very close to him several times.

Nice Elk...How is the meat after sitting all night? Can you tell a difference as to the game-y-ness (sorry for spelling) of the meat versus if it had been gutted immediately?

Congrats to you and your pup. It sounds like you got a good dog there. some dogs are born to hunt.

The meat was fine, although i hit an artery way back which destroyed one of the rear ham's. I have never tasted game-y-elk.....

Nice one!!! Congrats to you. That broadhead really makes it look like you hit it with a cannon, huh? Especially when you hit a shoulder or ham and sever the artery. My Cow had a lot of blood shot meat in the front shoulder. After all night it must have been a real mess in the hind quarter. But, it still doesn't look like you are going to go hungry soon. Nice Bull!
